We will be traveling from St. louis Mo. to Colorado and then on to Moab, Highway 70 is closed do to mud slides. My question is do we take the northern route on U.S. 40 or try the southern route on Colorado route 82? I have never been on either but the northern route looks safer, not so steep. I have driven thru mountains before with my T.V. and trailer but don't want to scare my wife to death. Thank you for any input.
Depends when you are coming out. 70 has been opening and closing with the monsoonal rains we have been getting. Hard to say. Hwy 50 has construction, so try to avoid that.
If it were me, I would look at drifting down to Cimarron NM and picking up 64 west. You get some mountains between there and Taos but its all manageable going slow. From there cut NW to Chama and Pagosa Springs then west. Then west to Monticello and a short jog north into Moab.
Its one of my favorite drives with superb scenery.
