Tires for 1983 Airstream 310
I have been reading different post on tires for the motorhomes and was wondering what size and brand of tire has worked for others. I see that some have concerns about going from the 8R/19.5 to the 225/70R/19.5 due to the width. So far I have checked on a couple sizes people have recommended but they are discontinued on both sizes. Any help would be appreciated. This 310 has the Cummins/Allison combo if the weight might make a difference on ply.

I bought Hankook 8R-19.5 about 2-3 years ago. We've put well over 10,000 miles on them. They've held up well so far. Bought from a national chain supplier. We have the Diesel Allison combo also.

I just bought 4 8R19.5 Goodyear G647RSS last month from an outfit called Car
Shooz. They are date stamped 3 months old. I'm replacing the 4 on the rear axle which are a little over 10 years old. They still look brand new but the thread is worn down quite a bit. Yes they are Goodyear's.
I just found this outfit that has a pretty good price. https://simpletire.com/goodyear-g647-rss-tires I would check with them about age before I bought.

I contacted Simple Tire and they stated their warehouse ships tires that have a date code up to 4 years old, if you get tires that are older than 4 years they will refund. Has anyone swapped to the 225/70R/19.5 tires that are more available in my area of Tennessee. The tire store I use can get 225's easy but hard to find the 8r's. Want someone that can rotate and balance when needed if all possible.

There are quite a few threads here on the forums about this subject. Use the search bar up top and type "motorhome tires". You'll get a bunch of hits...here's one on the subject

Keep us posted on how they work out for you. We are all going to be facing this at some point. Biggest issue Ive seen is if the dually tires rub against each other. Thanks

Please let us know on how the rear duals fit, can't find any positive or negative comments on going to the 225/70R/19.5 on the Forums. I have got to order some myself in the next few days.

There are also Hankook AH-11's and Toyo M120Z's in 8R19.5"
The problem going metric is the clearance issues in the dually; also the rpm issue, as the metric total diameter is 1" IIRC smaller than the 8R's, which could add 500 rpms to maintain same speed. IMHO the metric are good up front and on a tag axle but not on the dually.
Cheers
Tony

Cole3444, we just replaced our 290 tires this summer because they were pretty cracked (one had a bubble too), and the spare was probably made in ancient Egypt.
After looking into your same question, I read about this solution so it's what I went with: 2 Michelin XRV tires (225/70R19.5, LRG) for the front, 4 Goodyear G647's (8R19.5, LRF) on the rear dually, and a G647 for a spare.
I bought the XRVs at Costco, but all 7 were installed at the tire shop in Ohio where I got the G647s. We did notice a mild improvement with steering after the 225's went on. All are 2016 or newer. No change on the ODO since it's the same size tire on the back end. They're all the same height so a slightly narrower spare up front should be ok if needed.
Side note, I'm spraying the outer 4 tires with 303 UV protectant about monthly.

Okay, my data is incorrect; maybe I should have written, possible clearance problems; but I do stand behind the diameter. 225/70R19.5 is 31.9" in diameter, where as a 8R19.5 is 33.6".
If travelling at 60 mph with 4.56 gears with a 33.6" tire; your rpms will be 2712; same speed, gear ratio, but a 31.9" tire diameter and your rpm is 2882. Okay, so not 500 rpms but pretty significant all the same.
Next time I'll do the math correctly, my bad
Cheers

Well OK then....will post pictures tomorrow of the Michelins on the 370LE....no clearance problems between the duals. I would check your OD measurements though, I believe that is not correct but I will check in the AM as I am trying to repair some broken shelving supports in the Snap-On truck at the current moment....all of the result of being rear ended while legally parked in Albany by a drunk driver in June..... Still love you though.....Is it time for another Get-Together yet ?????

Let me guess.....her insurance won't cover her if she is drunk and you'll have to go after her civilly?
Outer diameters I pulled off the net, but could be different for different tires due to tread depth I guess.
Cheers

Bob, she wasn't drunk. Obviously she had difficulty driving with her arms handcuffed behind her back.

I am curious if they make a spacer/adapter to go between the wheels on the rears that would fix the "possible" clearance problems of the wider tire size?

Spacers would probably work but the wheel studs would likely need to be replaced due to the added spacers.
