Ryan's '64 Tradewind....

Hey everyone,

Traveled to Social Circle GA this saturday morning to pickup my new-to-me '64 Tradewind 24'. She needs a total restoration although in very good shape overall. I have always had an affinity for these older vintage trailers and finally found the right example to restore. The bug continued watching my father-in-law restore his safari - http://www.airforums.com/forums/f192...2-a-78906.html.

I plan to have the tradewind gutted and the interior layout revised and renewed as well. I will be using this for my business (i am a photographer and need a location vehicle for clients) so the single axel 24' Tradewind is perfect for me. Anyway I will post pics as the restoration happens... in the meantime here are some pics of the early morning pickup as well as exterior / interior as she stands.

Looking forward to learning more about these icons......

Ryan

I am also suspicious as the cabinetry, bathroom fixtures, and range appear to be prior to 1964 Vintage. My guess is that it may be a 1963 model that wasn't sold until 1964 and was titled as a 1964.

There are so few certainties with Vintage Airstreams that this could be an example of differences between the two different factories or the differences between a model with Land Yacht trim or International trim.

Hey there... the number is 2420143. It very well could be an earlier trailer... the PO seemed to think it was a 64 although when trying to obtain a title they seemed to think it was a 62 so who knows. Where can you look the number up?

Maybe this means that it is actually a 62 then.... i guess that would make sense.

I'm no expert but I would decode that as following

24 for 24 feet
2 for 1962
D for double bed
143. 143th one produced that year

So yes! You have a 1962. It's good that that's what the title says because otherwise you might have difficulty registering it! Enjoy!

I will... looking forward to meeting everyone hopefully once mine is as shiny as yours!

As far as progress goes on the Tradewind - We aren't wasting any time. Attached is how the trailer stands today. I will be making a trip to N GA this weekend to start laying out the interior plans this weekend. I wish i had the time to do the whole renno here myself like most of you do... but since its for business, I am having a friend Rives Doss and his company gut and do the work on it. I hope to have more step by step pics as we go along.

Hi Ryan,
Welcome to the forums and nice find! Both the serial number and various other trailer details confirm you have an Ohio built 1962 24' Tradewind.

I will advise that if you are gutting and not reusing the interior, there are probably parts that could be of use to other forums members (and you might make a few bucks in the process). I, for example, might be interested in an original round kitchen ceiling lamp, an original bath over vanity lamp and/or shade, original faucets, an original furnace vent cover, and possibly some roof vent parts for my '62 22' Safari that I am restoring. Other parts like the octagonal closet latches and various other cabinet latches, lamps, etc. might be of interest to others.

If you intend to reuse these parts, no problem, but you'll quickly make friends if you offer parts you don't reuse to other fourms members rather than sending them into the scrap heap.

Good luck with your project!

Hey Joe,

I am planning on reusing a large amount of the interior but am keeping everything that is in decent condition. All of that will be cleaned up and offered on the forums for everyone

Ill take a look at your list and see what I have on the trailer but I do know the AC unit, Stove, and faucets will be saved and for sale soon

also your toilet is a much newer model than would have been on that trailer. Might pay to hold on to that too. Let us locals know when the parts will be for sale, I could always use something.

The furnace is an item many of pull out anyway. You can get a safer heater that is reasonable and runs on electric. I use a tiny one from Sharper Image. It heats the Overlander to a comfortable temp even in cold cold weather.
Try Ebay for some deals on 12volt inside lights that look retro.

thanks Alan,

I am actually planning on pulling the AC unit off of the roof and installing a 14000 BTU portable AC/heat unit on the interior of the airstream since we are gutting and redoing the layout anyway.

In fact I went to start the layout planning this weekend and see what condition the various systems were in after demo. A few good things were that the sub floor was in great solid shape, all systems worked though need updating, wheel wells show no rot, and the tub is in good shape. However, the plumbing is a mess, electrical needs to be replaced, black water tank was added above the floor and needs to be replaced with a larger unit and a few other items in the first stage.

• So we decided that we will put a new 1/8 plywood floor on top to level and a good base to put the new vinyl click together floor on.
• Redoing all of the plumbing with new lines.
• New 20+ gallon black water tank
• New freshwater tank in front
• Add small gray water tank for sink and shower
•*new electrical box
• New hot water heater relocated to bottom of closet for access

It isn't to scale but see attached as the floorplan I am leaning toward at the moment.

Lots more to come but these are the first steps

Long time and no post but LOTS of updates. The interior is actually 95% complete at the moment

We ended up reconfiguring most of the layout and ended up gutting the whole thing and starting from scratch. Most of the wiring was kept in tact due to it still being usable but all plumbing was taken out and re configured. New toilet use put in after testing the blackwater tank. The old freshwater tank was converted to a gray water tank and a new fresh water tank was added in the front with a new filler spout. All cabinetry was custom built in the trailer and is spectacular in person. We refinished the original tub and added a new shower head and bar mounted in the pocket door.

I ended up going with a 14000 BTU dual hose AC/Heater instead of the roof mount and based on the numbers that should do the job. I really hate the way the roof mounts look but only time will tell if that is a good decision or not. Only thing left is having the cushions made, a fridge, some electrical loose ends, and then of course POLISHING THE BEAST!

more from figuring out the plumbing issues as well as the poor condition of the walls and zolatone. We ended up scraping/fixing any holes and respraying zolatone throughout... love the factory look!
