High Tech Nomad

Okay, so I've been thinking about trying to set up my camper with internet access on the go, but I have no clue what route to take. I've seen those little USB cards you can get from cell phone companies to plug into your laptop, but I've also seen satellite dishes you can set up for internet. I want very fast internet, and have no clue what to do in order to set it up, and not get overcharged. If any of you have advice, I'll love some input. Thanks!

Little Buddy...we use a wireless adapter from Verizon. It runs us about 60.00 per month...plugs right into USB port on our laptop. I travel all over the US and have never been without access to the internet. But I'm sure there may be less expensive ways to connect (wifi hotspots, connection to cell phones, ect).

Little Buddy - I used AT&T for many years in the US and Canada. I think the USB port wireless system (3G & 4G) is the cheapest way to get into fast internet access. The cost of the satellite dome is pricey.

Hey Bob/Judy...thanks for the feedback. Just curious...how fast is the Verizon and AT&T connections? Like, for example, does it take long for a YouTube video to load up and play? That'll give me an idea of the connection speed for both services. Thanks!

I too use Verizon (I use the MiFi) and find it to be a reliable source of Internet near everywhere I go. I couldn't say the same for my AT&T Aircard--especially if you head out of a major town.

Speed was good on both. You can play a YouTube video fairly quickly. I'd say it's about 3/4 of the speed I might expect at my home Internet by cable, though I'm sure the speeds are a lot different technically.

All that said, Verizon does impose some pretty significant usage throttles. 5GB/mo for $60. You wouldn't want to spend too much time on Youtube if you can avoid it. I tend to use my wireless provider's Internet connection as a patch between free WiFi access (Starbucks, RV camps, etc).

My husband has used the Verizon Wireless USB on his computer for over a 1 1/2 years. Verizon goes everywhere it seems or pretty close to it. He would run it all day watching email or searching the Internet. He uses it for business. He has never use it with YouTube though. On my Comcast broadband some of the videos/movies run slow. It depends on the video on YouTube how compressed they made it. For us $60 a month was worth it.
