Ticking Rubber Time Bombs

Posted 04-28-2012 at 09:30 AM by aluminitus

So after choosing Carlisle tires on the advice given by the guy at our local tire shop, I went home and did some research.
I was horrified.
Out of 58 reviews, 54 reviewers gave these ST tires ONE star! With review titles like "How Much Is Your Life Worth?" and "WARNING CARLISLE TIRES ARE DEADLY" and "Avoid these tires like the plague", I was beginning to wonder if the tire guy had a death wish for me. I had not purchased the tires yet, and having all confidence in this guy's advice shattered, I went to another tire shop. I was set on light truck tires and even brought my dad with strict instructions to not let them talk me out of LT tires.
Fifteen minutes later, I had a set of Towmax ST tires foisted upon me by both the tire technician and my dad. So much for bringing backup.
They tire guy's reasoning was that LT tires had much thinner sidewalls than ST tires, and didn't come in 10-ply like I wanted. So I wound up with 8 ply ST Towmax tires. I had them mounted with the portawalls, then balanced for good measure. The whole thing cost less than I expected (and had been quoted).
I can't help but be scared to death of tires. Now that I know how they work (not a complete rubber dougnut, but held in place on the wheel by sheer will power) I am not at all confident in tires. Is there any other way? Hover Airstream, anyone?
After reading many blowout horror stories, I don't want to pull our camper anywhere! How do you all get over fear of the fact that your beloved Airstream is precariously sitting on ticking time bombs disguised as rubber?
