How Heavy are Twin Memory Foam Mattresses

We are considering converting our 25fb from queen to twins. Looking at getting a couple of memory foam twin mattresses. Not sure if I'll go with Rocky Mountain Mattress but the 8" would be the one I'd choose.

How heavy is a twin memory foam mattress?

Thanks

Kelvin

I ordered a custom made 8inch twin foam mattress from Mattress Insider. It was delivered in less than a week, and I couldn't be happier. I don't know the exact weight, but it is lighter than the original mattress for sure.

Is this what you purchased?

Luxury RV Mattress | RV Mattress Gel Foam - MattressInsider.Com

Did you have to supply them with the Airstream twin drawings?

I called them. Very helpful man explained to me how to measure the existing mattress. That was late on Friday. I had the new twin the next Thursday. I ordered the 8 inch...don't remember name. Not sure it as called gel. It wasn't the cheapest, which was a 5 inch, but the next one up. One mattress was about $400.

Looks like Rocky Mtn and Mattress Insider are both out of Colorado. Prices seem similar for the 8" memory foam. The one feature of the Mattress Insider 8" is the ability to turn it over to change the firmness. One side is firmer than the other.

It sounds like you got the 5.5" mattress.

Here is another place you may try. I don't know if they ship.
Franklin Bedding Products

My sister and BIL just had a real mattress made for here Airstream trailer (twins). They only ordered one side to try it out due to the price. It is a firm, coil spring mattress. It was about $500 due to the customization and the extra support along the edge where a person sits (put on pants, sock, shoes etc...)
I only laid down on it for two minutes and seemed fine. I am going camping at our Region Rally for a few days after labor day and I'm going to snag it for this trip and try it out for several days.

They tried our 8" memory foam mattresses from our trailer but did not like them. I would agree that they are just ok and at the end of the day I would prefer a real mattress.

Yes that is the main problem with mail order mattress, you can't try them out. Both places mentioned have a certain trial period. We have a Temperpedic mattress at home and at first the wife liked it, then didn't like it because it got too hot, and now likes it enough to bug me to swap it out from the spare bedroom with our traditional mattress.

My only concern is the weight. Our queen Temperpedic is pretty heavy.

We put a queen Temperpedic topper on our AS mattress and like it. It weighs 40 lbs.

We replaced the double original with an 8" foam queen. To my mind, the foam was definitely lighter than the original so I wouldn't sweat a few pounds difference width wise.

Mattress Insider does not make the mattresses in Colorado....the person you talk to on the phone is in Colorado, but the mattresses are actually made somewhere in the south. I think the Rocky Mtn mattresses actually come from Utah. I ordered the 8 inch version, not the 5 inch mattress from Mattress Insider. It was less expensive, and they made it and shipped it much faster than what Rocky Mtn mattress offered. There is no need to get drawings from Airstream. It is easy to measure the existing mattress and the Mattress Insider rep will explain how. He also has a Video that explains how to do it that he will send you. Note that there is no way to flip over the mattress when it has a curved edge...unless you switch the mattresses between the twins and turn them over that way.

An Airstream friend purchased a 'real' mattress that they love from Happy Sleeper. (St. Cloud MN).You can try out various mattresses in the store - they contact Airstream for you to get the measurements - and voila! You just pay up. Easy. I like that they get the measurements so if the fit is wrong - guess what - not my problem. So you can stay at the Minnesota Airstream Park on one of your many adventures and get a new mattress! Work in some great fishing and boating and sweet dreams! I really like that you can try out the bed - of course there are other stores that can do same thing for you.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I have a question about memory foam when its cold. We purchased a Temperpedic mattress a few years ago and it was delivered during the winter months when the temperatures were in the 30s or low 40s. The mattress was rock hard for hours while it gradually warmed up inside.

If traveling in cold weather and you stop for a night will these RV memory foam mattress be rock hard and too cold to sleep on for sevral hours? Or if its cold and you only keep the furnace to come on if it gets colder than say 60F. The bed area under the twins probably will remain colder than the heated living area.

Thanks.
