Rear Hitch on an AS

Has anyone added a hitch to the back end of their AS? If you have, id like to hear from you.

Illegal in many states, not advisable anywhere is what usually comes up when this question is asked.

Do a search on that phrase and see what you find.

Illegal? Why? Illegal to add a hitch for a bicycle rack?

Do a search on bike rack you will find an unlimited amount of information on how to do it correctly, I do mean thread after thread. If not done correctly you will damage you trailer. Not illegal where I travel or at least not enforced just not a good idea to do a hitch style rack.

BTW do a search for Fiamma bike rack which is the Airstream bike rack, I have one as do many others and they seem to be the easy solution. Others have come up with some home grown solutions which are as good if not better. Just do you homework.

This question seems to come up every other day now and the person asking never likes the answer. Moderator maybe sticky could be made with all the threads in one place.

I actually once installed a trailer hitch on the rear of a 24' Argosy and pulled a small boat with it.

Trust me when I tell you that it IS NOT something you want to do, legal or not.

Illegal to tow anything from a rear TT hitch in some states.

Using it to haul bicycles needs a lot of care so as not to cause rear separation.

From my limited search to double tow in California the first trailer has to be a 5th wheel. So unless you have one of the very few Airstream 5th wheel trailers built you will not be towing anything behind it.

For a bike rack it is not illegal. However since you didn't post why you wanted a hitch in your first post the main reason for a trailer hitch is to tow a trailer which is illegal in most states behind a travel trailer.

You also never mentioned what year and model Airstream you have and don't have it in your profile which makes it harder for people to give accurate advice, after all from what you posted you could have a motor home and not a trailer which would make all advice in this thread completely wrong for your situation.
