2014 20' Flying Cloud outlets don't work

When I am plugged into 30 AMP my lights come on but I have no power in outlets. I have flipped the breakers and tested the Arc fault electrical outlet in the bathroom. That did not fix.

Any ideas?

Well, your lights have nothing directly to do with the 30A shore power except for the converter charging the battery that supplies the lights. Are you certain you have good shore power? Do you have a multimeter?

Is the fridge switching over to AC or is it still running on LP? (it's just on an outlet, depending on how your trailer's wired it may be on the same circuit as all your convenience outlet or it may be on a different one.) Does your converter have power to charge the batteries, or is your DC voltage 12.7v or less?

Hi

Does this happen at all campsites or just the one you are currently at?

All good questions, but don’t know any of the answers.

Airstream OH didn’t think it was a faulty converter.

How would I test for your other questions?

Ok, 2 different campsites makes it more interesting. If you don't understand how to troubleshoot AC service, at this point I'd recommend contacting a mobile RV service company or (if convenient) taking the trailer to a reputable RV service shop. I'm guessing you have an open circuit somewhere and 120v AC can be dangerous if you don't understand it.

Good advice so far.

You may have missed my reply in the 20-footer thread?

Your interior lights do not work off the 120-volt shore power. They are supplied with 12-volt direct current from the batteries. You might want to review your owner's manual about all the electric IMO.

Peter
OK . . . you have checked the circuit breakers for the outlets, but how about the GFI aspect? Some circuit breakers also have a GFI button to reset.

Do the other 120-volt functions work? [A/C, fridge, water heater] How about the exterior outlet on the curb side near the rear? Ditto to David's question . . . is your battery voltage [one hour after unplugging from shore power] around 12.7? When plugged into shore power, what does your monitor say the battery voltage is? [~13.2?]

Good luck,

Peter

PS -- Did you get the water pump sorted out?

PS -- Maybe a GFI on the back of the inverter?

That would ONLY bring down the inverter-backed outlets, though... that's quite a few of them (in my 26U at least) but not the most obvious (galley, bathroom, bedside...)

. . . but on shore power [as here], does the inverter "pass through" the 120-volt A/C to all outlets, with its GFI covering all those outlets? The answer may vary according to model and year IMO. See the last post in that thread just linked.

The recent inverters pass-through to the inverter-backed outlets only. On my 26U, that's the fore and aft TV outlets, the DVD player, and the outlets under the table. The exterior outlet, galley outlet, bedside outlet, (hidden) fridge & miocrowave outlets and bathroom outlet don't pass through the inverter. It's a useful distinction and might help alreardon with troubleshooting. I took "all outlets" to mean they checked each one but it might have been a sample.

The OP and I both have a 2014 FC20, so the inverter setup could be similar to that other thread IMO. It is at least worth noting the existence of a GFI on the back of some inverters, as one logical link to be checked, in the chain of causation.

Hi

Two out of how many? I've pulled up to several campsites that had no power to the post. It's not all that unusual. Indeed if it's 2 out of 5 this is very unlikely. Two out of a hundred ... yup, that's about right.

First step would be to plug into a different post and see if that solves the problem. Second step would be to wiggle the ends of the shore power cable and see if the lights go on and off .... If they do, *stop* using that cable before there's a fire

I am wondering if the GFI outlet in the bathroom might be bad? I tried to test and reset and neither button popped.

Hi

Most GFI's these days need power to them before they will reset. If there is power to the device and it does not reset then it's a good bet it needs to be replaced. Finding one that fits here or there some trailers can be a bit exciting. Swapping out the breaker to the circuit is a valid answer in this case. Depending what's on the circuit doing that may or may not create issues.

I never heard the answers to these questions I would first check when checking out this problem.

Is there power to the trailer?

Is the 30 amp circuit breaker turned on in the post?

Is the microwave clock display illuminated? (Only works 120vac)

Is the inverter off? (Would give bad info if on)

Eaton BR20 from Home Depot

EatonBR 20 Amp Single-Pole Combination Arc Fault Circuit Breaker from Home Depot was a quick fix of similar problem for me last month; it clipped in without any drama. This assumes your microwave clock is lit and your outlets don't work. $44, 5 minutes to install using common tools. (It took me 1 hour to determine the correct brand for bus bar clip compatibility).

Hi Al,

Is this a trailer you've had for a while and this is a new problem? (IOW, worked previously and now doesn't).

Is the problem in all outlets, or just the ones that are connected to the inverter?

Thanks,

Steve
