Catching Up

We had lunch, so not really dinner, but we had dinner food, does that count? We say, "YES!"

We took our friends Ruth and Carmella (Mame on AirForums) who were visiting from Portland to Tu Lan - Vietnamese Cuisine on September 24th. It's a hole in the wall and admittedly the interior probably hasn't been painted since the Carter administration but Julia Child has eaten there and raved about it. Tu Lan - SOMA - San Francisco, CA

We both had the Bun Thit Cha Gio. Grilled, marinated pork with spring rolls over a "salad" of cold rice noodles, grated carrots, shredded lettuce, herbs, bean sprouts and chopped peanuts with a nam pla (fish sauce) "dressing".

What's on 'our' menu for Saturday night Oct. 16?

Jackson Potluck

Hi Neil -

Well, we'll definitely bring some funky and pretentious cheese from Cowgirl Creamery. We have a huge chunk of roquefort sitting in our fridge right now, just waiting for Friday night's happy hour. You can count on Red Hawk and Mount Tam, burrata, manchego, some goat cheese and possibly some mimolette. Of course, we'll also bring some honeycomb. It's already packed in the trailer!

We're not sure what to bring for Saturday's potluck. We made a side of salmon with fennel and fuji apple relish for Casini's potluck in April. We made achiote chicken with grilled pineapple and mango salsa the last time we came to the rally in Jackson. People really seem to like that. We're thinking of grilling some lamb brochettes and serving them with maybe a relish of persian cucumbers, tomatoes and feta or a Moroccan orange, red onion and olive salad. We definitely won't be bringing any shrimp - don't want to compete with Vinnie's awesome shrimp kabobs.

We're so looking forward to the potluck!

Okay, now, what's for dinner?

Your friends,

Salad

Last night we had a crab, avocado and ruby red grapefruit salad with homemade thousand island dressing.

Our stab at going somewhat carb free.

In celebration of Murray's birthday Gemma made . . .

reservations at Cafe Des Amis. Cafe des Amis - Marina/Cow Hollow - San Francisco, CA Cafe des Amis

Murray had the chicory salad and the blanquette de veau (that's veal stew for us Americans), and Gemma had the foie gras terrine (yep - cold, potted liver) and the petrale sole. We shared an order of profiteroles for dessert.

Really dark and grainy image of the petrale sole. It was so dark in the restaurant that we seriously considered making an appointment with our optometrist the very next day. Kinda sad - before we considered candle-lit restaurants romantic and now we're considering bifocals.

Should we say: "WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE!"...... LOL

Your food makes us jealous..., can't get much out here but road kill.

Cheers, Steelegood

Thanks!

Hey there Terry!

Thanks for the B-Day wishes. Yep-bifocals and possibly Geritol are on the horizon.

Now, don't be jealous. We're sure all that southern cooking has been good to you. When we lived in Tennessee, the folks were so friendly and neighborly. The only thing we really missed was the ability to walk into a restaurant at one in the morning and have some Chinese food. But a big whoop, whoop for Waffle House though! (Do you think that if we walked in with our bacon and egg outfits they might take a little off the bill?)

Thanks for contributing to the thread - we really love to hear about what everyone else has for dinner.

Your friends,

Um, uh, just realized that you may not know which bacon and egg outfits we are referring to.

NO, They wouldn't take a little off the bill, they would probably either give you your meal for free, or make you guys stand outside on the corner for advertisement.

We should get our "Beer Can" costumes from last year out to you, and then the meal would be complete! (we went to Myrtle Beach with two other couples, and we all dressed up like a six pack of "schitz" beer)

Would like to get together with you guys sometime. We just spent 10 days on the road. Camped near Asheville NC (did alot of hiking, 10 zip-lines, Bridal Veil Falls, etc.), then camped in VA (hiking, riding the Virginia Creeper Trail, tracking down wild horses), had a great time! Now it's back to work !

Regards, Steelegood

Gemma's girlfriends want toast and hash brown costumes for next year. Not quite sure how we could load everyone up in the car if we had to get anywhere. Sure would be quite a sight.

And uh, who has beer with bacon and egg? Beer and cereal - yes. Beer with bacon and egg - we think not. Must be a southern thing.

If you have an image of your "six pack" we'd love to see it.

Your friends,

Gemma's brother went deep-sea fishing last weekend so we had grilled rockfish for dinner last night. Grilled rockfish, sliced tomatoes and yes, that's right, rice!

Nutella on 12 grain toast for dessert.

Thanksgiving Early

We usually spend Thanksgiving with Murray's family in California's central valley. So every year, Gemma worries that someone will beat her to the turkey wings. In an effort to allay Gemma's anxiety, we usually have our own little Thanksgiving dinner either before or after the actual holiday.

Turkey was on sale - so Thanksgiving it is!

Last night we had a twenty pound roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, giblet gravy, brown sugar glazed sweet potatoes, cranberry and winter fruit chutney, green beans and an amazing apple pie that Murray made with Honey Crisp apples. Everything was made from scratch, with the exception of the heat and serve rolls and canned black olives - which some of our friends needed to make it feel like a real Thanksgiving.

Turkey soup to follow in the next few days.

Not Turkey 2.0

We got some fresh mussels yesterday, so mussels and not turkey for dinner last night.

Mussels steamed with chardonnay, shallots, garlic, olive oil and lemon. The mussels were great but the broth was just as amazing.

We're trying to post a jpeg image but it's so not happening. Gemma got a new iPhone after washing hers and it doesn't seem like the images are loading correctly on her laptop. We'll have to try it with the iPad.

What's everyone else is everyone having for dinner?

Greek Pizza from Antonio's Greek resturant! Does Gemma know that throwing the phone in the washer is not how you "wipe it clean?" or......, is it? LOL

Clarification

Oh, no. Gemma does a pretty bang up job on laundry - checking pockets and such.

Gemma washed her iPhone while washing dishes. Yup, sink full of water. Didn't notice it until oh, maybe three minutes later. She was a little heartsick, since less than three months earlier she left a five month old iPhone in the restroom of the San Francisco PetSmart. She and phones, well let's just say that it was probably a good thing that she was a regional sales manager at a major wireless carrier for a few years - since a phone in her hands has a usual life span of six months (and that's being generous).

This iPhone replacement thing is getting expensive and tiresome. Thank goodness the iPad is so much bigger - hopefully she won't just walk away from it or immerse it in a vessel containing any type of liquid. Wish her/us luck.

Thanks for telling us about dinner. Greek pizza - sounds good. Feta and olives!

No dinner for us tonight, at least not yet. Gemma was in meetings all day in some high rise in San Francisco and it was catered. So she had a cup of half and half with some coffee and three packets of sugar in the raw (she never has coffee but figured she would be sedentary for at least three hours before lunch so what harm could it do), a half slice each of pound cake, banana nut bread and some other sort of cinnamony nut bread, some grapes, mango nectar, half a turkey and swiss cheese croissant, and some peanut m & m's later in the afternoon. By the time Murray picked her up at 5:30 this afternoon, she was on a sugar high and coming down with a headache. Oh she was super chatty too. Super chatty. That's saying alot. Really.
