Wow, Yellowknife would be a challenging destination for our Airstream!

How about E for Embudo, New Mexico. Embudo is kind of stretched out along the bottom of the Rio Grande gorge, lower section. At one time, a train used to run through this part of the gorge, coming out below the really deep part. You can still see the rail bed, and Embudo Station, now in private hands, is still there.

A quarter mile or so up from the station is the gas station museum that many folks find kind of interesting. Lots of old gas pumps, signs, and the like.

By far the most critical, though, is Sugar's, where you can get one of the finest green chili cheeseburgers in New Mexico! Warning, though: If you're towing, it's best to enter Sugar's only if you're traveling in from the south. It's really hard to get back out on the highway without getting creamed by traffic if you have to cross a lane of oncoming cars.

Oh, by the way, Sugar was their loving dog. His headstone is located in the yard off to the right of the burger shack.

Sugar's! Well, just do a search. You'll find dozens of foodie sites with mention of the place. (Just ignore those that locate Sugar's down the canyon a bit in Velarde. They're probably New Yorkers who've never even been there.)

Oh, oh, oh, O is for Ojo Caliente, New Mexico.

But, of course, as luck would have it, there are (or were) four Ojo Calientes in this state, so I have to specify which one: I mean the Ojo Caliente on Highway 285 close to Espanola and Abiquiu. (Guess it might have been easier just to say that it's the only one that's not a ghost town, huh?)

Anyway, Ojo Caliente is pretty well known nowadays for its mineral hot springs spa called (tah-dah!) Ojo Caliente Hot Springs. For the most part, it's a pretty nice place, though their little RV park off to the site is a bit of a sad afterthought.

In addition, the village also boasts some nearby ruins at Puje Cliffs, and it's also not very far to the west to Abiquiu (Georgia O'Keefe's Ghost Ranch!) and Abiquiu Lake, which is a pretty nice COE campground.

A D! Must be for Dulce, New Mexico. Dulce is located on Highway 64 between Chama and Bloomfield. The area is fairly hilly and covered in forest. A pleasant town with a casino and a grocery store (among other things), Dulce is the tribal headquarters of the Jicarilla Apache Nation.

Oh, and there's a derelict of an Airstream sitting in the middle of a pasture about five or six miles outside of town to the west!

An M! I guess an M must be for Mora, New Mexico!

Mora is located about 25 miles to our south. It's located in a valley (thankfully warmer than the one we're in!) that is well known historically for its grist mills. Several ruins of mills are still visible. One, the Cleveland mill (a couple of miles outside of Mora) is now a museum; the mill itself is still operational and is turned on during the Cleveland MillFest.

Mora, New Mexico - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
www.clevelandrollermillmuseum.com

Outside of Mora to the east is the Salman Raspberry Ranch, where we often take WBCCI guests in August or September. (The main building of the ranch is, of course, another old mill.) And just north of town is the Victory Ranch, an alpaca ranch that also sells all sorts of alpaca products.

Alas, the road between here and Mora has a narrow stretch as it passes through one of the ranches, so while it's just fine for vehicles, it's not so great for towing.

Santa Cruz, California. Home to a 1924 wooden roller coaster at the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. Very near Big Basin state park, one of the nicest parks in the Bay Area. The mascot of the local university, UC Santa Cruz, is the Banana Slug. Best place to park your airstream is New Brighton State Beach, one of the very very few California state parks with full hookups.

Enjoy the Z!
