Where to put a microwave in 25FB?
Hi,
We have fallen in love with the 25FB layout,(actually like the 27FB slightly better but it's too big for our Tundra). But . . I can't figure out how to get a microwave into it. We camp about 3 mths every Spring and, when we aren't dry camped, really use the microwave a lot , esp to reheat dinners. I've searched the boards but can't find any mention of this. Is everyone just doing without a microwave? What have other owners done?
Thanks,
Jagzoo

Welcome from the Florida Panhandle
Welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.
We have an '05 Safari 25FB named Lucy. We have towed Lucy over 40,000 miles, and have spent almost 400 nights in her.
We camp mostly with hook-ups, and really like our microwave. It's a necessity in our lifestyle. For about 2 years we kept the microwave on top of the stove burner cover. It worked OK, but we wanted something better.
SuEllyn designed and built a cabinet that provides extra counter space, and has selves for our microwave and printer. It is installed on the couch next to the refrigerator. We hav been on several long trips with it, and it works very well for us.
Here are some pictures.

Hey jagzoo -- welcome to the forums! We ordered a stovetop-only with a convection microwave under. Granted it only works with a campsite plugin or the genset going but I've never regretted the versatility of this combination.
This thread wasn't designed to feature all the benefits of a stovetop and microwave but you get the idea -- http://www.airforums.com/forums/f426...-se-44885.html. I hope they've ironed out the kinks I found. There'll always be something...
The pantry in the 28' FB International is deeper and they've put a tiny microwave facing the oven at mid-level in the pantry. It's a very weak microwave without the convection option. I really like our convection microwave.

You can remove the stove/oven combo, and replace with a stove only. You can fit a convection microwave into the spot formerly occupied by the oven.
There was a 27FB model in our shop a few weeks ago in this configuration.

Microwave
We have a 2007 27 ft classic and had the dealer remove the oven and install a combination microwave/convection in its place. We have seen microwaves installed in the roll out pantry but we preferred out setup.
About the Tundra, if it is a newer Tundra, you probably have the towing capacity for a 27 ft. However, many will tell you that a 3/4 ton is needed.

barkingspider set me straight that the longer cab Tundras have higher payload -- but that's the original and not the new Tundra. Research payload before putting all trust in tow capacity. A 25' FB with full LP cylinders and weight distribution gear installed will exceed 900# tongue weight in ready-to-camp state.

We found a microwave at Home Depot that fits between the stove top and edge of the double sink in our 25' FB. We put it on a nonskid thing on the floor when we travel. I have seen some really small microwaves on the internet. One (also acted as a toaster) had really bad reviews on Amazon and another was from a mystery manufacturer. And they are so small, a lot of things wouldn't fit in them. Brian's wife came up with a really clever idea, though books and coats seem to take that space in our trailer. I like the space for the printer below it too.
The newer FC's don't have the double sink. They have a round one and something would possibly fit between the sink and the window and leave a little counter space next to the stove. We use one side of the sink to let dishes dry, so you lose that with the round sink.

It can be swapped out
Hi,
I have a 28' 2007 Safari SE - it came with a propane stove - but I wanted the propane cooktop and micro/convection oven. To make the sale the dealer offered to swap out the propane stove - they did and the service manager told me that it fit in there slicker than grease with no problems. So you might be able to use that as a bargining point with the dealer as it's apparently no big deal to exchange them. I plan on doing a lot of bondocking when I go full time - so will need a generator - but hooked up I'm so glad I held out for the one I wanted. The only down side is that you have to reset the clock on the oven every time you set up camp - not a big deal.

Check the specifications on the models you're looking at. In the 2007's we looked at, the hitch weight was lighter on the 27FB and the gross weight was only about 200 pounds more, so weight might not be a deciding factor.

You can find different specs for the same trailer and same year from Airstream. From year to year you can also find changes despite the trailers seeming identical. The hitch weights listed in a 2008 brochure for Safari FB's are 720 for the 25' and 790 for the 27'. On the website, the 2009 specs for the FC FB are 760 for the 25' and 775 for the 27'. Both the '08 brochure and '09 website agree the GVWR for the 25' is 7,300 and the 27' is 7,600.
The only difference between the 2008 and 2009 seems to be the 25' went from the double sink to the round sink. Other pecularities are the 25' is 25'11" and the 27' is 28'; the 28' is one inch shorter than the 27.

Thanks to you all,
We will try to use the exchange of the stove for the microwave/convection oven a bargaining point.

As most of us are plugged in more than boondocking....how about getting the convection microwave for the majority use and buying a small 12 volt oven from a marine order house for boondocking.

This thread is so old it has the photos of Moosetags' zapper arrangement from 2009. I, after seeing that, did the same thing, except I didn't make the cabinet. I bought one from an unfinished furniture store. That store closed years and years ago too. Ahhh, memories. Now I have a cheaper trailer that came with a zapper installed. Progress.
Antique, wouldn't a 12 v. oven draw down the batteries a lot? I realize your post was 9 years ago.
