Lug nut torque

I converted my wheel bolts to studs and nuts some time ago. What is the correct torque for original aluminum wheels on 74 Ambassador? I need a number for my tire man.

All I can tell you is that on the 2017 models lug nut torque is 110 ft-lbs for aluminum wheels.

From my 2006 owner's manual:

Torque aluminum wheels to 110-120 ft. lbs. and steel wheels to 95 ft. lbs.

Simple wheel torque solution.

The wheel nuts require checking regularly. Pulling 100 -110 ft.lbs with a 18in torque wrench low down on the ground is not easy, especially for a woman. My guy buddy created this hack.

Solution. Get the right size 1/2 in socket, 1/2 drive bar, extension drive, a 4ft length of 3/4 steel pipe (Lowes about $20) - preferably galvanized, and a 25lb weight from a weight set (Academy). Connect up the socket, drive and pipe, to nearly horizontal and gently lower 25 lb weight onto the end of the pipe. If the torque is correct, there will be no movement. If it moves, remove everything and tighten the nut and check again. Do each nut. 4 ft x 25 lbs = 100 ft.lbs. That's within the accuracy of most torque wrenches

You're making the process harder than it needs to be.
Get a decent torque wrench, put the correct socket on the end, put the wrench on the lug nut, and PUSH DOWN. Do not lift.

That there wrench in the box will not measure torque and your wrists are not calibrated.

I tried a torque wrench and was unable to reach the 100/110 ft. pounds torque. Thus the hack.

NancyJane,

25 lbs at 4’ horizontally from lug nut is 100 lb/ft.

If you can handle the 25 lb weight comfortably I say you are hitting the spec.

But I also agree that’s a lot of effort that a torque wrench with a longer handle is capable of handling. Forgive me, a ladies version torque wrench.

Maybe a solution is a small tray of muffins or sweet rolls at a camp will locate a volunteer torquer. You hand out the torque wrench (yours) ask for help and reward with pastries.

At any camp I’ve been at if asked to check lug nuts I’ll help. I carry tools.

Tip o’ the wrench to you.

Gary

I understand that there is most always a nice man to assist a gray headed lady, but I am determined to understand my trailer and to be self sufficient.

Yes but in 75yrs no wheel has departed any vehicle I've used it on 👍...plus if you tighten it as tight as you can, (up on one side, down on the other), you will most likely be able to get it off. 😂
Think of it as an organic impact wench.

Ck regularly...how often? What about the TV?
I've never even had a wheel loosen.
Mating surfaces clean & free of corrosion, ck that?
Ever tighten a hot wheel/tire? To what torque setting?

Yes, same here, but a tandem axle trailer is different than a car. In tight turns the trailer tires/wheels get a lot of force applied sideways. That has a tendency to loosen things.
I don’t know anyone who retorques the lugs on their car wheels every trip.
For a trailer you really do need to do it. Especially after having remounted a wheel.

Well I admit, I do 're-torque' at least once a Season. 👍
