Learned a $150.00 lesson today, buy a hitch pin lock if you do not remeove hitch from TV. Yes I should have known better. I am replacing today but
can someone tell me the ball size of my '70 overlander 27 footer.

Sorry to hear this James. I just put the hitch bar on my truck -- 2 5/16", 10,000# capacity. overlander64 could tell you the exact year, but before 1969 or so there were some smaller balls.

This is a peeve of mine. I really am annoyed by hitches left on vehicles.A few years ago I watched a little old lady pushing a shopping cart run into one before I could warn her. She hit the ground pretty hard, groceries all over the asphalt, broken glass, minor bleeding. A few of us shoppers went to her aid and then the dick weed that owned the truck came out looked at what was going down and was irritated that he had to wait while clean up was in progress. At that point I was ready to remove his hitch and force feed it to him. I'm sure you're not one of these types James, the only time my hitch is on the burb is when I'm pullin or parked in my camp site. Mini rant over DG

The ball size is 2 5/16" for the Overlander, this size started in late 1969.
Someone stole the WD bars off a forums member's coach one night while he was asleep in it, stranding him. Fortunately I had a spare set I could send him, or he'd still be there...
And yes, they can hurt you if you leave them on, I have the bruises and scars on my shins to prove it. However, mine weighs 50 pounds, and I now have trouble lifting it into place, so it stays where it is. I have noticed in this area the more aggressive tailgating drivers tend to back off a couple of feet so they don't wind up getting the hitch stuck in their radiator. There's two ways to look at everything.

Looks like overlander63 and overlander64 are mighty handy with hitch-story -- both certainly have been around the block once twice.

As a part of setting up the hitch assembly comes out and is stowed, every time. I don't want to be the one who whacks it with a bare shin.
I also understand in some states its illegal to leave it there as it hangs out so far from the rear of the truck, but don't worry, no one will ever get a ticket from leaving the thing there as its not glamorious enough to warrent a law enforcment person lowering themselves to do such a thing.
We can't get the city police to ticket the four wheel boom boxes, trucks 36 inches off the ground, too many headlights, red light runners, speeders, or even respond to breakins and auto tamperings. We are told to call it in. I'm still trying to figure out what part of my taxes (percentage) goes to the police department so I can stop paying it as we the people are not getting what we pay for.
Even the cars are false advertising, they say police. What we have, by definition is a security force. They have not "policed" in decades.

Security is responsive.

I used to take mine off all the time and store it in my rear compartment. However since I began using the Enkay mud flaps it became just too much effort. I do wrap the greasy ball in a plasic grocery bag so that at least the wound won't be greasy.

And I always use a hitch lock when travelling.

Gunner, rest assured mine won't be left on anymore, would it still be a peev of yours if it wasn't an old lady whose was hurt? I have also skinned my shins/legs on mine as well.

Doorgunner, I understand where you are coming from, but little old lady or teenager, it's really not the owner's fault if somebody walks into his/her parked vehicle. While I am sorry she got hurt, I find it hard to blame the parked truck for the little old lady's accident any more than if she had walked too close to the rear of his truck and caught her leg on the corner of the bumper.

Mine is heavy and dirty, it stays on the truck when travelling (at home it goes in the garage). Surely the rest of the world can stay the extra 1 foot away from my bumper to avoid running into it. If they hit my hitch, they are way too close to my truck! Though I certainly would have helped the poor old lady who ran into one, that's just cold!

Please NOTE- It was the dick weeds attitude that set me off. I get tweaked at myself everytime I stroll into my hitch when hookin or unhooking. Yes I understand we all need to be responsible for our actions, kinda like when the guy parks his truck behind home plate and a foul ball breaks his windshield, that wouldn't be his fault either?

Yep and Yep. I leave mine on as well, and it is going to stay right where it is. Dont like it? Watch where you are going and dont tailgate me.

Our's comes off when not towing so we can put the bike rack back on. I really like the tip I got, think it was from this forum, about locking the hitch assembly back on to the recepticle on the trailer. Spin it around so that it's under the tungue and it's secure, out of the way and not getting grease all over stuff in the van.

My mother-in-law (little old lady) leaves hers on 'cause it's too heavy for her to toss around. Yep, hurts like the dickens when you walk into it

I actually take my Hensley bar out and put back my bigger but not as long weight distribution hitch bar in. I use it to tow other trailers and it sure keeps the tailgaters away from the back of the truck. I do feel the senior citizens pain as I have walked into my own hitch more than once.

I have a smiley face that travels in my receiver but no yellow tennis balls below it. It lights up when I hit the brake. I guess it is advertising for Walmart. The hitch ball gets locked to the trailer. Unless they spend alot of time hitching up, it makes stealing the trailer a little tougher.
