Toyota Tacoma TRD - who's towing with one?

Just curious who is towing with a Tacoma TRD with the tow package.. 6500lbs what are you towing how do you like it... I'm looking at a double cab 4x4 with 6spd manual. What mods have you made to the truck if any? I spent two days driving new trucks and I'm sold on the Tacoma.. (gas pedal issues aside)

I think it would be best to choose an Airstream first so you know how heavy it is and what the tongue wt. will be. You'll probably go through a lot of trucks while you have the same trailer. You want to make sure you get the trailer right because the depreciation on a new one will astound you if you're looking for new. If you want a used trailer, you may not get exactly what you think you want.

From the looks of it, the contemporary Tacomas are the 1st generation Tundras renamed, so you might check tow vehicle threads about the earlier Tundras.

Towed a 2006 22' International CCD weighing in at 4100 lbs. dry with a 2007 Tacoma TRD 4X4 Off-Road package and did not like it at all.Truck had to be run in fourth gear(5 spd. auto) was often hunting for a gear and could not use the cruise control.I would suggest that you get at least a 1/2 ton and save yourself any problems.

Little truck/big heavy trailer usually makes for a regrettable towing combination. Sometimes, using extraordinary means and set-up procedures can make this work, but it's a lot of hassle.

My 73 tradewind is a25' which weighs about 4000 dry...I tow with an 05 Tacoma TRD with the Tow package....I use the Reese dual cam anti sway set up and it works well...
This fall we went to Niagra, Ontario, Adirondacks, Maine then back to Va about 3500 miles, I didn't have any problems and suggest that you make your own call as to the truck and trailer within the specs provided by the manufacturers...

Hello! To any folks with Tacoma TVs who are using a Reese dual cam "Strait-Line" with a Bambi (~4500 lbs GVWR): what WD bar weight are you using?

The dealer set us up with 1000# bars because those are the lightest they keep in stock, but I'm worried that those are too heavy for our little trailer.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a '02 Tacoma, V-6, 5 speed, TURD pkg with locking rear diff. I have pulled my tractor on flat bed, (about 5500 lbs) but it's not fun. No issues with control, but up hills it's a chore.

It's a very tough truck and the perfect size for what I want. Newer Tacomas are larger.

If you're on flat land, I saw that even a bicycle will pull an Airstream

Hey thanks for the responces. Since my first post we have picked up a 08 double cab TRD and it is a great truck. We drove out and picked up our new project 1975 25 foot airstream. It pulled great with the Reese weight distributing hitch. Pulled it from Vancouver Island to the interior of British Columbia in December. Completely without issues, snow cover mountain road included. The lodgic of having a tow vehicle be larger than the trailer seems rather inefficent. Last I noticed Peterbuilts and Kenworths confront the same thing. If I want to go fast up hill I'll take the old 550hp Porsche 930 and pack a tent.
