Tow Vehicle Tire Question

I知 needing tires for the 2005 Tundra,
Stock size is either 245/45/16 or 265/70/16

Either size will fit on my rims.

The following sizes are available in the tire I知 looking at (coopers)
265/70/16 -112T
LT245/75/16 - 120/116R
LT265/76/16 - 123/120R

Is there a real benefit to moving to an LT tire?

Why would you use anything other than a light truck tire on a truck? Are you thinking of putting passenger tires on your truck?

At the Toyota dealerships there is a search tool that will let you put in your vehicle information and it will tell you what tires will work for your truck. I put in some of your information and the list didn't include Cooper tires. The Michelin Defender LTX 265/70R16 is a very good tire. I believe the dealerships are having a sale in April if you buy 4 tires.

Thanks,
Toyota put P rated tires on it, so I知 debating between replacing tires with the same specs as stock and going with a heavier duty tire.

I知 in Canada so our tire options are a little different, some shops will refuse to install anything other than the exact stock size and spec tires.

I had Michelin tires on the trailer and I致e never seen tires rot as fast as those and they were covered when not towing. Coopers were recommended by a friend and are significantly cheaper than the Michelin痴 so I知 trying them this time.
Just looking at the available sizes.

LT tires have a greater load carrying capacity.

My first Toyota was an '89 pickup and it came with low profile performance tires. It had great handling, especially pulling a 17' bass boat. I loved that little truck. I always replaced the tires with performance tires, but I wasn't anywhere near my weight limits.

My '04 4Runner V8 came with Dunlop GrandTrek AT20 and I bought the same for replacements. I'm ready for 4 new ones but the reviews on that tire say it's really bad for traction. My miles are almost all highway, pulling my AS or bass boat. I never had any problems with them. They rode well and inside the car was pretty quiet.

I've been using the Defender tires on our '99 Sienna, no problems, but it is garage kept. I'm going to go with the same Defender LTX for my 4Runner or the one my son recommends (which gets great reviews) Michelin LTX A/T2.

Odd rule in Canada for replacement tires, but you should be able to use the toyotatirecenter.com site to select different approved tires for your vehicle. The Defender is no longer available for our Sienna, I had to get General Altimax RT43, not even OEM Michelins, so you can't get an OEM tire, it would have to be a different make.

I used the toyotatirecenter.com link but plugged in Niagara Falls zip. The Michelin Defenders came up along with Goodyear Wrangler SR-A 4 Rib. Both of those look like they have very good ratings if you Google them. I can't put in a Canadian postal code. Try using the "locate me" button and put in your truck's information, see what comes up.

Les Schwab / Back Country

Locate a Les Schwab tire center, several in Canada and Northwest U.S.. Last summer while in Montana with our Travel trailer I needed to replace 4 tires on My Jeep GC. Service and quality of Tires are excellent. Best tire I have ever purchased., smooth ride and Price.

An LT tire would be a heavier duty tire than the P.....I can see the shop refusing to install a P tire on a vehicle that was rated for LT tires, but I would venture to say that installing a heavier duty tire would not be a problem....but I do not know Canadian tire law !

Canadian Tire found me tires in the stock size but LT, being installed tomorrow. The tires are their store brand labelled Motomaster but made by Cooper in the US.

At our local Costco they will only install tires matching the door sticker. My truck says P rated on the door so that is all they were willing to sell me.

Thanks for the help everyone.
