Tow vehicle - 64 Comet
My dad has a like mint 64 Mercury Comet 202 with the 6 cylinder in it. He's thinking of getting rid of it. Will this pull a 65 Caravel? It would look cool pulling it.

I agree it would look kewl...
If it had an 289 V8, I'd be incline to try but..a V6 of that era, is maybe a 170 cui?
Hookem up and take some pictures...It would still be neat to see that~

I don't think it would be a good idea. Now a Galaxie 500, that would be a sweet ride!
(53FC. . . the 170 cid was an inline 6, not a V6. It was a step up from the 144 cid)

I agree..I've got tooo many V's in my life.. 
My thoughts of "kewl" were for picture taking only..Not for towing..

Rob... I learned how to drive in a '63 Comet with that engine! 'Course it was old THEN... uh... in... uh... 1970...  Wow!
The Comet was basically the Mercury version of the Ford Fairlane of the day... The inline-6 wasn't terribly gutsy, but it was adequate. If you're talking about towing mainly on flatlands, you use a weight-distribution hitch, a Prodigy controller or something equal or better, and you put a tranny cooler on the tranny (if it's an auto), and an oil cooler and maybe some added oil capacity, you could probably get away with it. I know that there are old Airstream ads showing the Ford Falcon towing the Airstream Falcon (which was built on the 22' Flying Cloud/Caravanner). Attached is the famous "Bambi behind a Chevy II" of the era at Mount Rushmore.
You'd have to remember that the Comet has small drum brakes all around, and is a very light car... I wouldn't recommend it for regular towing, or towing cross-country, but for fun and the occasional nearby outing, I think you'd do fine.
By comparison, I tow an '87 Burro 17' widebody fiberglass trailer that tips in at around 2500 lbs with a '94 Toyota extended cab pickup with the 3.0L V6 and an auto with all of the options, and it handles it just fine with a Reese Dual-cam. I'm going to pick up a '53 Flying Cloud for a friend next month, and I'll probably take the Toyota rather than the Excursion for the 1,000 mile round-trip.

A 64 Comet with a 170 would do well to tow a utility trailer with a lawnmower on it. I had an old Bronco with the 170. In stock configuration it would barely tow a small aluminum fishing boat. Kool car though. Haven't seen one of those in years. Put a small V-8 in it and upgrade the brakes........

... and the transmission, suspension, wheels, tires, of course, cooling system....
It is true they don't make 'em like they used to. And when I think about my '62 Comet, or the '67 Mustang I used to drive, boy am I glad. Those things rolled like a drunken sailer and steered like a cow. I doubt you would ever notice trailer sway; it would seem like the normal wandering those cars were prone to.

lol. That is true ! I had a 1964 Comet HT with the 289 V8 option. I towed a horse trailer with it, empty of course. It didn't do very well with that. I would tow my Caravel with it if I still had it. It was a great car except for the steering and the small radiator size.

For a stump pulling vintage tow vehicle that has A/C, Cruz, front & rear Arm rest the size of a sofa end and a trunk big enough to put the aux gen into go to ebay and type in 1966 Chrysler New Yorker. All they want for this 2 dr is $1,700 bucks.

I typed to fast for the 66 NYer that is going for Seventeen Hundred bucks. Also on ebay is a 66 Imperial "Le Baron" for only Thirteen Hundred bucks. The Le Baron is a much better ride than a NYer or Comet.
