The only time I wish I had 4X was on the beach at South Padre Island. I was not towing the AS, but almost got stuck in the sand due to the weight of the front end of the pickup. We get about 11 to 13 mpg depending on driving conditions.

Maintenance issues at 103,000 K miles have included a new VP 44 pump and a fuel tank pickup pump. That cost, about $2600.

If you have checked it out and the PO has good maintenance recordes, I'd go for it. We are happy with ours.
Yup, Cummings has the heaviest Diesel of them all. Ford owns stock in Cummings and had the option of puttin the Cummings in their F250's but wouldn't do it because of the weight. So Ford decided to build their own.

met a guy at the flying j on my way back from fla, pullin a 4 axle boat trailer.his 97 cummins 12 valve, has run the east coast all its life pulling heavy boats.only mod was a different fuel plate.had a manual trans, and it just turned 1,004,000 miles.the body on the truck was really beat, but the owner had no intention of buying anything new he was just patching the outside of the truck as needed.he told me nothing was ever done but maintenance.hard to beat that mans testimony.

I celebrated my '06 Cummins this week by finding a free repair manual download. 9,000+ pages of instruction. Lovin' it!

Hit me with a PM if you want the link.

to keep it on topic - i have a 4x4 mega cab and use the 4wd in the rally field aat least a couple of times a season.

I bought my '04 (QC, longbed, 2WD and manual) in 2007 with 120,000. Now at 162,000, one repair (u-joints/rebalance driveshaft) and averaging 23 mpg, ALL miles in the past 15,000 (mainly solo, highway). Made a return trip yesterday from our house with a nearly 2000-lb load under the cap and still averaged 25 mpg at 58-mph (with a favorable wind). Have seen highs of 27 several times.

The 305/555 motor is the last one to get great fuel mileage. The 2004.5 HP increase to 325 does one no favors in this regard.

It's pretty slick to see the overhead indicator tell you that, at fillup, you'll be able to travel 822 miles on 33-gallons [useable]. (And, yes, I've corrected for discrepancies.)

I question whether Ford has an interest in Cummins.

I have 2007 6.7 cummins. The 6.7 is a very heavy engine. I do have the 4X option. I have been in slippery conditions where the rear wheels could not move the truck (no trailer) and had to engage the 4 weel drive. One time was in a parking lot in North Carolina.

That is repeated over and over and over in the truck forums from the Ford fans.

Ford owned a minority share of stock many years ago. They sold it long ago to pay the bills when they where taking huge loses. Ford doesn't have an option to put them in the F250/F350/F450 trucks. Chrysler & Cummins recently extended that agreement.

http://www.cummins.com/cmi/content.j...4&langId=1033&

A CMI stockholder report should list all parties that own at least 5% of the stock.

Thanks newroswell. I had heard that also several years ago and checked at that time with the local Dodge dealer who said that was not correct.

2006 MegaCab 2wd

I love mine! I have not needed 4wd ... not to say that it might come in handy some time...but I find it much more comfortable to slide easily into my cab than into a 4wd cab...and for the few times that it "might" be convenient, its just not worth it to me...

the mega cab is great., too...plenty of room...14mpg towing...21 hwy empty

IMHO I would never buy a truck that isnt 4wd, mybe thats cause I do alot of backroad camping. But I drive in 2wd 99% of the time but that 1% makes it worth it.

Check out the Dodge Cummins diesel forum Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum Ever thing you ever wanted to know. Like you'll be able to get all your engine codes by turning the key switch 3 times, you don't need to buy a code reader. Impressive site.

Questions on chips etc for diesel engines!

I am hearing different scenarios relative to adding performance equipment. I have had the Smarty Junior recommended for $500 and a complete Banks sytem including chip, exhaust systems and a digital monitor for $3000.
My truck tows my trailer just fine, but I primarily am interested in improving mileage. But I've been warned about adding a chip am not adding the additional exhaust and monitoring systems.
I'm interested in some information from experienced owners.
