If you buy a Tundra....

Sad news today. We have a 2010 Tundra Crew cab as our TV. Love the truck (till today). Had the off road and tow package installed when we bought it. It did not come with extended mirrors however and I thought "no biggy, I can always get them later". Today our curb-side Cipa mirror extension blew off on a bridge in a cross-wind. So I said the heck with it, I will go bite the bullet and get Toyota to install the mirrors. About $264 each, "but", the dealer says, "while the holes will line up, all the wiring is different so the power will not work and the blinker will not work." Dealer told me the truck would have had to have been ordered from the factory with the extended mirrors, they cannot retro fit them on at the dealer.
Now while I think it is silly that the Tow package does not include mirrors, I think it is unbelievable that they would build a truck that you cannot upgrade later if you decide you want them.
Guess I will try out a different brand of temporary mirror (maybe one that will strap on this time). And if I ever decide to buy another truck, I will probably go back to brands that actually allow you to upgrade with OEM parts at a later date.

Ahh well....back to my happy place....Aaaammmm

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Nissan does the same thing with the Titan. There's a lot of things you can upgrade, but tow mirrors are not among them.

That dealer is uninformed. Many have swapped the standard mirrors for the tow mirrors, and I think all functions still work. Search this site for details; there are lots of posts on this subject.

Yes... I doubt the wiring is not there. I know at GM those up-grades are doable. Cost wise it makes no sense for the manufacturer to have separate harnesses' for different option choices.

You may just have a greedy or lazy dealer.

Yup, TundraSolutions forum has plenty of threads showing that it works fine, I'm thinking of switching mine from the the shiny Limited mirrors to the tow mirrors.

The tow mirrors do not fold back, which to me , is the reason I have not converted from the Limited mirrors.

Toyota should include the tow mirrors with the tow package, and they should fold back like the Fords and GMCs do.

Well this is strange. Bought my 2010 Tundra in Oct 2009 - had the tow mirrors added by the dealer - and the blinkers work just fine. Maybe you need to find a new dealer.

The tow mirrors also do fold back.

But their manual, right?

During the winter, I have the motorcycle, snow blower, and wifes Land Cruiser to squeeze in between, so I need the electric folding feature feature to make it all work.

Just try getting some OEM floor mats.
I still love my Sequoia (Tundra) with or without OEM floor mats.

If I recall correctly, some of the wires have one function with the standard mirrors and do something else with the tow mirrors. I think you may have to switch some pins around in the harness or something like that. However, I think all of the functions are still there.

We special ordered our Tundra with the tow mirrors from the factory. Seems like they should come standard with the tow package, but it was an option, which saved us about $800 over the standard mirrors. The lower price is because when you order the tow mirrors, you get the manual tilt/telescoping steering column instead of the electric steering column with driver memory.

Yes, the mirrors do fold back, manually. I have not found this to be a significant inconvenience. I only fold them up in parking lots, to prevent people from walking into them and falling down (from personal experience).

well, after spending a lot of tie on the Tundra forums, same issues exist for all those folks. Some work and some don't. Seems there is no logic behind the wiring installed, regardless of model. some have 3 wire harnesses, some 8, some 13...I will have to pull it off and look.

Contacted another dealer today. Cannot be done is the message. Guess it has to do with year, trim level, etc... Ahh well, at least my Airstream can have all kinds of stuff put on it.

I wish Toyota representative would read this. I love my Tundra, very nice tow vehicle. But some of the options, packages, etc. don't make sense in the combinations that they're sold. I prefer the factory ordering system such as Ford Chevy, etc. Perhaps Toyota factory in Texas doesn't permit such a thing. Still a little market research would go a long way, and one reason people order 5.7 liter 380 HP trucks is to tow. The mirror situation is ridiculous. All the tow package mirrors should have telescoping/folding feature.

Other dealers can

After checking out my Tundra my friend bought a 2010 Tundra. He had to leave it with the dealer for a few days while the dealer added the folding tow mirrors, running boards, and brake controller.

My tow mirrors (and his) extend and fold manually.

I've been a big Toyota fan for quite a while. I think they tend to make excellent vehicles.

But when I bought my truck, it was a very close call between the Ecoboost Ford and the Tundra. I could pretty much pick up Ford w/ tow package, mirrors, brake controller right off dealer lot. For the Tundra I could find no tow mirrors in so. CA with the trim level I wanted. It was a very close call that I bought the Tundra at all. I'm glad I did but didn't actually love adding running boards, brake controller and cipa mirrors.
