As a side note, I have camper hold downs bolted to the bed and rear bumper of my '12 Chevy 2500 HD. Clipped the corner of the car port with the tie down and did $2200 worth of damage to the outer skin of the bed. Had to buy extra braces for the rear bumper tie downs. When I was at the body shop, I was able to compare the gauge of the metal used in earlier pickups and there's no comparison to the thin stuff they're using today.
The EPA mandates to improve gas mileage (read the WSJ story above) is forcing the manufacturers to bow to government dictates rather than consumer wants and needs.
