Boy what a mess this stuff makes

We strip the camper this week.I should of been replacing the floor and part of the main braces but i was to mad at the other owner trying to cover it up ..We decided to start on the outside instead.I have cuts all over my hand i think i bleed out a pint of bleed today.Cleaning all the old vulkem from the windows and doors and,I only got one side done.Hubby replaced it with Trempro .....Goodness that stuff is messy and hard to get just right.The last owner i guess was vulkem happy it was every where.....Sure hope the pur bond isn't as bad as that other stuff is to work with.My hubby is a painter and uses caulk all the time in new house he said its a good thing it only has to be done about every two years...lol He said its nothing like anything hes ever used before..Tomorrow if it doesn't rain ill hopeful get the other side done....So we can start compounding and polishing maybe this week....Then we go back inside to replacing the floor,main brace and re doing sink and shower.
Ill let you know how the Trempro holds up so far i haven't used much still on the first tub out of three i bought.For cleaning off the old Vulkem i used lacquer cleaner.And a five and one painters tool and a razer scrapper.Times consuming but worth it i hope....ill take pic tomorrow and show the before and after messy...lol

I used a heat gun to soften the old Vulkem and it comes right off. Then the rest can be wiped off with the laquer thinner or MEK. Be glad it isn't silicone. That is the worst stuff to get off and you have to get ALL of it off or the new stuff won't stick. At least with the Vulkem/Trempro a bit of residue isn't a problem.

Personally, I'd recommend using a wooden scraper to remove the gunk as the razor scrapper can scratch the aluminum skin..

That could work but this is old and very dry cracks all in it.For the most part.Lookes like its been on for about 10 years or more....lol Nasty stuff...But can someone anwser one thing ....How long does it take for this to set up...and the pur bond too?

Vulkem is produced by Tremco & distributed now as #636, the Vulkem name is only used for certain concrete-masonry caulks now.

Xylol or toluol is most effective solvent for cleaning up seams after using tooling (putty knife, syringe, etc) to best fill seam cavities.

Tremco 116 is much more readily available but has a 48-72 hour tack free drying time versus 6-8 hours for the #636. 1/16" per day drying from outside in, the polyurathane uses water vapor in the air as a catylst; any moisture trapped in seam can produce CO2 will may cause voids and bubbles in the caulking.
