Custom Aluminum Replacement Roof Vent for Our 62 Flying Cloud
We just finished installing a new custom made roof vent to replace the original fiberglass vent which was in very poor shape. We were not able to find anything that looked close to the original, and looked way cool as well, so we fabricated this one. As there were several holes in the roof where the PO's had moved vents around at one time or another, we made the base plate large enough to cover all the various holes that had been cut in the roof over the years. Many hours and many rivets later the results are quite pleasing!

Actually, we are working on it! The number of man hours to do the first one was a bit staggering, but we now have a template, a few shortcuts, (not to mention a few bruised knuckles and a large pile of empty beer bottles) and a really cool looking vent to inspire us. If you are interested, let us know and we will keep a list of people to keep updated.

Add me to the list. I may need two of em. One for the fan exhaust, and one where the old panel ray exited.

No problem! Based on the man hours we have into this thing, if you send me your 53 Flying Cloud, I will send you the vents!

Do you have any photos of how your made the step-down edge? That's not one piece of aluminum, is it?

Hey Zep,
Did not take any pictures while we were making it, but you are correct, that is not one piece. As they say, I would tell you more but then I would have to kill you!

What thickness of alu did you use?

Beautiful work.
I've been thinking that I'm not a huge fan of my original yet plasticky 'fridge vent cap on my '63 Olander. Something similar to that would look so much better.

We used an .062 Aluminum so that we could weld it. We are still playing with the tig setting to minimize warping.

Depending on how your original vents were positioned, and if you still need two vents or are just trying to cover a hole (see attached picture), you may be able to do what I did and cover both holes with a large base plate. If we come up with a price that works for you (we are still working on it!), we would just need the dimensions for the base plate.

Thanks
