'67 Caravel Door lock Question
Hi, I have a 67 Caravel. The exterior door latch works ok, except I cannot get the keys to lock or unlock the latch. Any ideas on how to make this work.
Also, I notice a new Bargman L100 lock is $39.00 here locally at a trailer store. The L100 Special is about $100 more online. I know that the L100 special is needed for the longer setback. Question: Can I buy a L100 and use the longer striker from my existing latch?
I've been working on the Caravel for a year now and I'm about to make a shakedown cruise. Thought a locking door might be nice.
thanks,

I purchased a L100 special and had a hard time getting it to lock at first. Can you lock and unlock it when the door is open? I could very easily when the door was opened but when it it is closed it is much more difficult. The way I can get it to lock is by pushing on the door at the knob and then locking. I don't know if the longer bolt will work in new lock.

When I first got my 66, the key would not work in the lock though the knob turned well.
I cleaned out the lock mechanism with brake cleaner spray, then lubed it up well with Blaster spray and then light oil. It works great now.

Key may be the problem
I just check the three keys that I have and this may be the problem. All three keys are small brass ones that fit the access doors on the trailer. I've been trying to get one of them to lock/unlock the main door, but now I think I need a Bargman key for the main lock. Is it possible to get a key and have it made to fit the lock?
Or, maybe I should just buy a new L100 lockset and use the key and lock assembly and use the longer latch on the lockset in my unit??
Andy would know the answer to this. Andy, where are you?

I have replaced several of the custom units with the standard L-100 when the striker bolt was in good condition, its a simple matter of a few screws and you have it. Be aware though that striker bolt can wear, the ears inside can break etc, so inspect carefully.

You are right about the key. It is larger then the others. There may be a skilled locksmith who can make you one. But the L100 is not a bad idea either.

Spare keys are not available, because of the coding.
Perhaps a key shop can help you.

Before you head out - be sure to whip up a doohicky

A little extra security to make sure the door can't fly open while traveling!

On my 69 I bought the L100 and used the longer latch. Everything is alright now. It worked perfectly.

Solution
Yesterday I picked up a brand new Bargman L-200 lockset and installed it. It works perfectly. The 200 is just like the 100 except for the lever on the inside instead of a knob. Price 38.95 at Eastern Marine in Newark, Delaware. Thanks for the help everyone.

So did you use the longer latch from your old doorknob?

Please be aware that if and when you might slam the entrance door with your hand on that inside handle, you may find that it breaks off rather easily.
That's why most owners switch to the inside "knob".

Don't Slam It
I always hold the handle out on the outside when closing the door. The same way on the inside, I turn the handle so the bolt retracts, pull the door closed then let go of the handle. This way the striker plate doesn't get smacked hard. I never slam the door. At close to $500.00 for a new lock, I don't want to damage it.

My locksmith buddy figured out that it was the same tumbler/key setup as early 1960's Ford. Now I have a working lock with a bitchin' Ford key!
