Antenna maintenance

According to the manual we must lubricate the O ring on the elevating shaft at lease twice per year in order to avoid a leak. I am confused about setp#2; "Removing the top retaining ring". It would be appreciated if someone could better describe step #2. Apparently once done, step #3 is simply removing the black plastic hex nut on top of the antenna and pull the shaft out from the roof top. Any guidance you could give me on where this retaining ring is locaated and how to remove it will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Do you have the standard crank-up Winegard antenna? The paperwork with mine says to just pop off the little rubber plug (on top), squirt some silicone spray in the hole, then spray the teeth on the nearby gear.

Yes, mine is the standard crank up model. In addition to spraying silicone around the edges on the roof, down the hole with a plug and the gears; my instructions talks about lubricating the Rubber Quad ring or face possible leaks. The instructions on page #8 of my pamphlet are a bit unclear. Possibly since your AS is a 2011 VS a 2008 as I have they eliminated the rubber quad step.

I received a return call from Winegard concerning lubricating the O ring. The person told me to simply remove the black hex bolt on top of the unit and spray silicone down the hole and "let gravity take care of it". I trust this is accurate but it is contrary to the instructions in my manual.
