Just read your upgrade article. Does the BMS allow you to charge the lithium batteries from any converter/charger? I have the PD4655 converter/charger or do you have to replace it with another type of charger.

No.

LiPo batteries won't respond well in a standard 3-stage charging environment. They only work well with a CC/CV charging regimen (constant current/constant voltage). Programmable charging sources like Blue Sky solar charge controllers with their iPN-PRO remote and Magnum inverter/chargers (minimum size MS-2012 plus the ME-RC remote) are my charging devices of choice.

The Tri-Star 60 MPPT solar charge controller can handle larger solar panel arrays with a single box. It is also programable. We will be loading our TriStar to it's capacity with nine 100 watt rated AM Solar GS-100 solar panels. This installation has a Magnum MS-2812 two pole inverter.

We are using the Blue Sky 3024iL solar charger controller coupled with the Magnum MSH-3012 single pole inverter and five 100 watt AM Solar GS-100 panels. I think six would overload the 3024iL, but multiple units can be daisy chained together for bigger arrays controlled by a single remote.

Lou,

The Blue Sky 3024iL will handle up to 800 watts. Additional controller heads are a very simple addition with a single iPN-PRO remote as the programmable control.

This is what's possible for a 'large' array:

This customer is returning to upgrade his battery bank for a 1200 amp/hour lithium pack in April.

I'm glad we cleared that up.

Very similar here, this is what we are doing, while slaving the old Blue Sky 2512iX to the 3024iL for ground deploy.

With the 3012 you can run the A/C with a single Honda generator.

You can actually run a single roof A/C without ANY external power source with a Magnum MSH-3012M and s minimum 400 A/H battery pack.

Experience on my MSH-3012M and the 15K AC on my 2015 Classic. The 15K AC will start and run with the Lithiums only. It will start and run with any type of shore power in the mix. It will start and run with the Honda supplying A/C power, but typically only when the AC unit has not been running (cold compressor).

My theory is that with a cold system the Honda has enough oomph to get over the initial surge of AC startup. Doesn't seem to matter where I have the shore power setting on the Magnum RC50. But if the AC is shut down and then restarted ( no changes in Honda or Magnum) many times the Magnum will go into an overload fault. I think it is because there is enough pressure in the compressor that it just won't work.

Lots of testing and that's the conclusion that I have. Didn't have the issue with my FC25 with a 13K AC unit.

Honda will contribute about 100 DC amps to an AC load of about 150amps. My solar panels on a bright sunny day will throw in about 40amps so the Lithiums are being drawn down at a 10-15ah rate. Love those Lithiums and the Magnum Hybrid.

For someone who doesn't have solar, other than a portable Zamp 200, can one switch over to lithiums using this type of system.

12V 100Ah,StarkPower 'UltraEnergy" Lithium Ion Battery (LiFePO) Energy Storage Battery

This battery is the same basic shape and size of a lead acid battery but only 28lbs and is $959. The BMS is integrated into the case. I'm assuming you can connect two together in parallel like lead/acid batteries. These should be able to be used in the existing A frame battery box.

Then use this charger in place of my PD4655. Price is $217. They offer higher amp models

PD9160AL 60 Amp, 12 volt, Lithium Ion Converter/Charger

There is no inverter in this type of system. We can't see a need for an inverter other than to power the TV and charge a laptop which I can do with separate inverter.

The only question for me is if I want to connect my Zamp 200 portable solar to it would I need to get a compatible solar controller in place of the Zamp controller.

In theory, yes you could do that. Would I? No. I'd stick with AGM/Lead Acid with a bank that size. Right now, I think the cost to benefit ratio works better for larger bank sizes like 400+ Ah.

Before buying ANY lithium cells, checking with the cell manufacturer as their specific voltage requirements is absolutely necessary!

The PD lithium charger has voltage settings that may be too high for many lithium cells.

They are still a long way from plug and play!!!!

I ran the A/C in my '15 Classic multiple times over this last season on batteries only. The install I did with the Magnum MSH3012 and the 4 Lifeline 6V batteries was awesome. On one trip, we had zero hookups for 5 days. The 600W of solar panels and the Magnum/battery combination worked flawlessly. Thanks, Lew! (...and when the Lifelines are gone, I'll be going to Lithiums.)

Kelvin the battery and charger combination you mention sound like they would work together. Both are based on 14.6 volt max charge rate.

That charger would cook many other type of lithium batteries which have a 14.2 max rate.

The price of their 100ah battery at $959 would compare to a 100ah Elite (without BMS) at $620.

As Lew mentions there are lots of moving parts and folks should be careful. Doesn't take much to put together a system that would toast some very expensive batteries.

Found this plug and play installation similar to what I posted above.
