Help on wiring external running lights

I am trying to fix a short in my running lights on my 1976 Argosy 28’. I repainted the trailer four years ago and replaced all the running lights in the process. The exiting wiring runs through a tiny hole in the trailer body that seems to be wearing away the plastic insulation and shorting on the metal surrounding the wire. I am trying to figure out how to insulate this wire through the whole without removing any interior of the trailer. I have posted a couple of pictures to show the wire. Any suggestions would appreciated

Try sliding some heat shrink tubing over the wire.
