Crooked nipple

I have a leak at the plastic screw nipple coming out of my fresh water tank. When I found the leak, I went to tighten the nipple and noticed that the nipple was screwed in a little crooked. As I see it, here are my options

1) unscrew the nipple, apply teflon tape, reassemble

2) unscrew the nipple, apply abs glue, reassemble

3) unscrew the nipple, apply epoxy, reassemble

4) retap the tanks threaded opening for a larger nipple

What would you do? ( already searched for hours )

Apparently, whoever installed the nipple, cross threaded it.

#4 is your best long term solution.

I have never retapped plastic

Is heat involved in the operation. ( I sure dont want to ruin the opening to the tank )

If you're cross threaded you can pursue a couple of options. The first thing I would do is unscrew the fitting and visually inspect the threads of the tank.

I have seen instances where the threads were cut at a slight angle. This looked funny and is a reflection of poor craftsmanship, but is still functional. If yours is cross threaded and does not appeard to be badly damaged you can try to re-cut the threads as opposed to over tapping.

Otherwise...you will need to see if the tank can accomodate the next tap size and install a larger fitting, or goop the threads as mentioned in your post.

Plastic is fairly forgiving, and can be easily tapped. Use a good quailty tool, food grade oil for cutting, and take your time.

Regards,

Kevin

We have no indication of your model nor the age of the water tank.
Is the nipple coming off the side or top or bottom?
Will you have "plenty" of room to do your working?
Is the surrounding poly brittle at all? If so removing the nipple becomes much more problematic doesn't it?
If you can get it out I'd certainly try to seal it first. Teflon tape or teflon daub-on.
Or I'd research what other thread sealing products are out there.
If it holds fine. If not the re tap as last resort.
Obviously you do not want to pooky it in there with some sort of cement that would make later removal totally precarious.
