Zip Dee awning spring unravels??????

My 20' x 8' awning on the 1989 34' as, TT, had to be rewound by hand, the rewind spring has either snaped in two or I ASSUME the 4 pop rivets located 4' from the end of the rewind tube have sheared off, allowing the spring to unraveled, making one hell of a noise when it happened.

could someone suggest which would be most likely, or is there possibly another problem.

thanks for any input.

Here's what the guts of your roller look like.
I don't know if you can see from my pic but my spring actually was snapped close to the end of the roller. It was an easy fix replacing it.

Roll the awning out about 4 feet and support it with a ladder. Now remove the bolts that attach the supporting arm to the trailer and remove the lower section of the supporting arm while holding the upper section firmly, I am sure the spring has NO Tension on it but just be safe. Once the 2 sections of the support are separated you will know if the spring has tension or not by the force against your hands.

Assuming there is no longer tension, the spring has broken, remove the roll pin that holds the arm to the spring shaft and remove the arm. Drill the 4 rivets out and remove the spring assembly from the awing tube.

If you do still have tension hold the arm securely and unwind the spring and then drill out the rivet and remove the spring assembly.

Once you define the problem and replace the spring reassemble the tube and wind the arm against the spring for 27 turns and install the lower section of the arm and reattach it to the trailer body.

Thanks for the quick replys, the one question I'm not sure of , do the 4 pop rivets act as stops, stopping the spring from turning, but allow the spring to be removed without drilling out the rivets or do the 4 rivets have to be drilled out before you can remove the spring assembly?????

The four rivets just hold the end cap in place on mine. The end of the spring assembly
goes through the end cap and then is attached with a bar like clip I believe with a bolt through it.
The thing that stops the spring from turning is a claw like piece you can see in my pic that only goes to the center of the awning pole. It acts as a grab.

Here is a breakdown of the parts inside the roller. Once you determine the problem, give Zipdee a call (credit card in hand) and get the replacement parts. Always be careful when working with that spring.

Also Make sure that when you re-rivet the endcap you have it so the Z lock lever (release/locking) mechanism is accessible with the awning wand. Mine is one rivet off making it a little tough to grab. Come to think of it I should have marked it with an indelible marker in a spot so it would line up the same.

My lock lever is on opposite end of the spring. My spring just broke, and will not come out,I`ll have to drill the the rivets at the inside spring end. What makes it fun is it`s the driver side awning, where the awning is rivited to the tube. Are we having fun yet?? $129.00 from Outdoorsmart.Dave

Is the lock lever in good shape???????

Click here to see the Lock lever

There is a kit that is suppose to repair the lock lever.

It takes a big bite out of the price.

Zip Dee does sell just the spring. See part Number in az's post above.
You can remove the spring, I had the same issue with getting it out. I had to use some long pipe I had lying around and just wacked it a few times to dislodge it. Like I said that claw at the end of the spring is weged in there.

Are you trying to do this with it still attached to your trailer?
