Lazer Thermometer

Harbor Freight sent me a coupon for a lazer theremometer for $4.99 with coupon. If you want to check your brake temp etc this is a very good deal.

I bought one of these years ago. Handy in the kitchen, kid's science projects, garage, bedroom, etc.

Laser thermometers are the absolute best way to determine the optimum tire pressures for any rig. After driving on a good stretch of interstate allowing he tires to get up to temperature, stop and check the inside, outside and center temperatures of your tires.
If you have too much pressure, the center temperature will be higher. If the edges are hotter, you have too little pressure. You'll need to test several pressures and temperatures with the goal of getting the temperatures as close as possible. Finding the optimum pressures will maximize ride and tire longevity.

Yes. VERY revealing tool to have.

Being in Southern California, few towing trips driving many continuous hours got 95F to 110F tire temps on warmest days 90F was the ambient air temp.

Seems tire temps ran approx 10F higher than ambient or more if facing the sun however 1 front curb tire and hub was consistently 5-10F more than the others. This likley having to do with hotter (tighter) brake pad adjustment on it so more friction comparatively. Probably why it locks up first on gravel !

Love the tool !

I use one for tires, hubs and brakes but you want to get some stares, pull one out to check the temp of some cast iron over a campfire before you drop that first batch of batter for pancakes. That's cheating. Also works great for most any heat related diagnostics. Engine cooling system for example.
