Synthetic brake fluid?

2006 Classic 31, EOH Dexter Brakes- have had a few issues with calipers over the past year and after coming across a good deal on new calipers, we have decided to change out all four for new ones. Anyone have any recommendations or are there any contraindications for changing to synthetic DOT 4 brake fluid after draining the current brake fluid from the lines?

If the new fluid is still DOT 4 (whether or not the marketing department calls it synthetic) then it will be compatible with your existing DOT 4 fluid. Not to be confused with DOT 5 silicone based fluid, which is not backwards compatible.

The changes are to increase the boiling point. Is that a concern? I wouldn't spend any more money on a DOT 4 labelled synthetic, myself.

Best way to prevent problems with calipers resulting from moisture sitting in the low part of the system is to flush with clean brake fluid every so often. I use a two year schedule in all my vehicles, sometimes 30 months.

Synthetic brake fluid?

DOT 4 offers a higher boiling point than DOT 3. I don't have my manuals and their info should be the definitive word.

I do claim experience with the EOH brakes including bleeding, hoses, caliper seal replacement and a source of problems based on external corrosion.

If you'd like to discuss send me a pm. We also have a few threads one a disc brake discussion and my report on pressure vs time and bleeding.

Do you have the newer recall hoses installed? These make bleeding easier.

Don't discard the old calipers.

By the way, I have the same brakes on my trailer.

All brake fluid is hygroscopic so regular flushes are important to longevity. Dot 4 Amsoil is my personal preference but any fresh fluid is an improvement.

With the notable exception of DOT 5, which has a host of other issues.

At least DOT 5 does not damage paint.

That is a plus.

Some of the negatives are that it absorbs air, is harder to bleed, and is compressible.

Do you know if you have the replaced recall hoses?
