replacing roof airconditioning with hatch/vent

I am considering taking of the Aircon units from my caravelles and argosy 20 as I dont ever use them, they are heavy and spoil the profile...

Now that will leave a hole which I would like to use to fit a similar or larger size vent.

Has anybody done this before and can they give me some ideas what vents/hatch would fit the hole left by the AC?

How big will the hole be anyway?

thx

My '78 Ambassador 28' has the standard roof AC mid-cabin. I'm in SW New Mexico-very dry, and off-grid, no generator. I have a substantial solar setup and would love to replace the unit with a 12 volt evap 'swamp cooler'. The only one I've seen is no longer made. Anyone know of anything new?
Thanks!

evap cooler

evap cooler is just a shell with appropriate plumbing for water, the filters, and of course, the usual squirrel cage type blower (fan) with the motor. it would seem quite simple to me to replace a 120v motor with a 12v motor. just use very small (or modify a larger unit) house unit and then get a 12v motor. an effective substitute for one large blower would be to use a couple of heater blower set ups from an automotive application. then you could control air flow by how many blowers are running at once. I think you can get creative and build a very low cost swamp cooler by utilizing someone's cast-off unit and then raiding the local auto wrecking recycling yard. photos would be cool. pun intended

oops

sorry, i responded to a minor off-topic thread Hi jack, but the swamp cooler ques was close to the orig topic. going back to the orig ques, yeah, the first thing I did to my AS was to remove the horrible tv antenna. I replaced the AC with low profile unit, but if I were to totally rebuild an AS the roof would be smooth-all venting, etc would be via wall vents, including a "bsmt" (SOB term) air conditioning unit. My interpretation of the polishing of the outside is to make the units look slippery-my take, only, of course, but the idea of streamlining an airstream is an A+ in my book. All I have read about Fantastic Fans is that they are excellent air movers and negate a high percentage of the perceived requirement of air conditioning. And they will fit the hole as indicated, perfectly. Now, when I put a belly pan on my TV you know I am serious.
