Need Quite A/C for 71 Landyacht Globetrotter

I'm looking for current information on the best, quite AC to buy for my 71 land yacht 19' (for use in Texas Heat). The unit on it now , I'm told needs freon and it is a closed system therefore must be replaced.

I would like a quite style with heat. Please give me your suggestions.

Thanks!
Linda

Hi

Not quite sure that the terms "quiet" and "RV air conditioner" go together in the same sentence (even today). That said, the Dometic empire seems to have taken over just about everything that goes into an RV anymore. Finding anything else may be a bit of a chore.

Thanks, Uncle Bob! Do you have a model in mind to recommend?

Hi

My guess is that a 13,500 btu unit is going to be plenty for your needs. Basically the two you see used in Airstreams are 15,000 and 13,500. Dometic sort of has three lines:

Based on their description, the Blizzard probably is a noise machine. The Penguin's have been around for a while. People seem to like them.

Another option

I have installed Pioneer "split system" air conditioners on 2 Airstreams and find them to be more attractive, more efficient and MUCH quieter than roof units. The 12,000 BTU unit should be adequate for your trailer. The downside is installation requires more effort (cutting hole in shell, leak testing Freon lines, etc).

Yes the A/C systems are sealed, but find a good local A/C company and they should be able to find the leak, install a service port or tap and fix your unit. Newer isn't always better.

I went with a 13500 Coleman Mach series with heat and have been very pleased. Have been running the Coleman for 6 years now and have had no issues. It is quieter than my original Armstrong unit and cools much better. The heat element can keep my interior at 70ish with outside temp down to about 45. If on a full hook up the heat strip really helps in slowing down the propane usage in COLD weather.

Thanks everyone for the good information. I will check it all out!

Damon, I've heard of a fellow in the area that may can recharge my system. I will try that first.

I would use a RVP Coleman Mach 8 heat pump in 13.5K if I had to replace.

I have heard good things about them from Airstream restorers.

Check out the Atwood roof air. My brother-in-law purchased one for his motorhome and it is quiet and comes with a remote to adjust the speeds. It has heat pump on the high capacity model that works well.

Made in China and the jury is still out on durability.
