Need new A/C.. What about 2 instead of 1

I have a 31' center bath. I need a new a/c and am thinking about adding two small units instead of one 15,000 unit. Anyone done this?

Advice from recent dealer buy with my bro-in-law of a 30' Classic in St. Louis, is one 13.5K in front and one 11K in back for your neck of the woods. Do you already have a vent in the rear BR?
Wiring could be a challenge, but it can be done.

Edit: It may be a 15K in front.....I'd have to check.

Lots of discussion about 2nd ACs in the past. Here's a link to a search for "2nd AC".

The problems are adding the required electric and 2nd drain line. Also need bracing around the hole for the 2nd AC.

If I were doing it, I would put in one 15,000 in the middle and a smaller one in the bedroom as long as I was buying new.

I would think a single 15K unit would do it. What I have found is a ton of heat comes in through the windows. Awnings help a lot and so do white curtins or silver tinted windows. I tend to camp mainly because I want to be outside. If it is too hot to go outside then why camp if all you are going to do it stay inside and watch TV all day. As soon as the sun goes down you will be able to hang meat in there.

That being said, there is no reason you can't put an AC in the back. Your main problem is power. If you wire for 220V you can have one 120V off that 220V that just powers the AC. The power junction box for the pig tail is already in the bedroom. You just have to figure out how to get a wire up the wall. I expect you could run some sort of moulding from a closet to the AC and make it look pretty un obtrusive. I am thinking under the bed up the closet and over the ceiling. You will need to frame out the vent opening if it has not already been done.

I also think the 15K unit may do you well. Personally the time and trouble going to try to get that back hatch wired and braced would offset what you gain. You also may have to deal with an amperage issue at some campgrounds which would lead you to deal with the inability to operate both units at the same time.

I haven't had any issues on cooling capacity on my 30' slide out so far. As noted deploying the awnings all around cuts a lot of that heat load down. I had issues with the 13.5 K unit on my 2001 28' Safari. I added a street side awning that was as long as the patio awning and never had complaints on temperatures again.
