Cold weather advice

Heading for Granby, Co Sat for a week. Nighttime temps will be below freezing every night except one. What precautions should we take or should we change course?

Cold weather advice

Love camping in CO this time of year. You have nothing to worry about - we are not hitting any true 24 hour deep freeze cycles yet

Disconnect city water hose at night and fill up on LP / run your furnace for heat (not your heat pumps) and all will be well.... no concerns with freezing this time of year as the furnace will keep the plumbing warm.

You might want to wear a tuque when outside

It all depends on how much below freezing it will get.

Firstly, here is a link to get Airstream's winter camping guide:

https://www.airstream.com/community/...inter-camping/

Secondly, a couple of general tips:

The main thing is going to be avoiding your plumbing from freezing and bursting pipes, etc.

Obviously, keep the trailer heated inside. Most coaches route the heating ducts close to the pipes to keep them from freezing. Depending on how cold it gets for how long, you may need some extra propane and/or electric hookups to run a electric heater.

If it's going to get considerably below freezing, disconnect any outdoor hoses.

Alternatively, completely winterize the camper and do not use any water in the coach, and use facilities elsewhere.

Keeping comfortable inside is very doable, avoid contact with the bare walls to avoid the shock of near freezing metal on skin.

Those that have over-wintered in below freezing temps have a wide range of of things they do to skirt the bottom, rent a large propane tank, rely on electric heat and so on, you can search the forum here for ideas.

68/58/55 has high temps this weekend in Granby. Lows are 27/29/24. Your cool don’t even sweat it. Even if you weren’t running the heat it would not be cold enough long enough to freeze [emoji4]

Enjoy a great weekend of Colorado fall sunshine!

Hi

All of this *assumes* you run heat in the trailer. I can't imagine why you would not do so, but that is an assumption.

I would turn on the tank heaters at night.

One thing you did not mention - what's your source of power?

If you are going to try this off grid in a modern Classic with stock batteries .... not so much.

If you are on shore power, much easier. Even on shore power, when you get below freezing, the A/C units will no longer run as heat pumps. You will be depending on the Alde for heat. That will work on shore power alone into the low 50's / high 40's, but not much past that. To heat your trailer from 26F outside to 68F inside on the Alde, you will be burning propane.

If your propane tanks are not full already .... get them filled.

Thank you all for your quick responses. Had to look up a Tuque (which we have), and yes we will have full hook up with 30/50 amp. So all sounds good then, we will enjoy the week thanks to your sound advice. We will fill the propane, water tank and head for the hills. We will also be running our Alde system as Uncle Bob had mentioned. We found the Alde on electric will be challenged in the low 40's so we have learned to use Propane at those temps.
Thanks again!

I’ve been in temps as low as 17, 18 and windy and a bit of sleet and did fine. If this is your first real test of your Alde you’re going to love it. Extremely quiet and nice even heat even up against the walls but do watch the propane levels. I can’t remember how often I needed to fill up the tanks but I think I only had to do once all year. Now I didn’t stay in cold weather but a few weeks. I also kept the tank heaters on and disconnected water line. It might take a second hit on the shower boost to get the hot water up to shower temperature.

We are on the Front Range and winterized today also. But that is mostly because we have no more trips planned. Day time temps are fine. Just keep your heater and water heater running at night. You'll be fine.

Well we made it through the night of course with the Alde kicking and the tank heaters on occasionally. We didn't leave them on because we are showing 0 percent on the display but we know there is something in them. Water has been disconnected for a few nights now. Decided to cut the visit short here and head back to Denver for a few where it's slightly warmer. Thank you all for the great advice!
