Yup, Moab is definitely on my list of places to camp.

I just tent camped in Brooklyn, NY. The tent campers have it pretty good compared to the RV’s. At least you can camp reasonably in NYC. The campground is Floyd Bennett Field National Recreation Area CG. No hookups but nice showers and cheap.

The camping for RV’s isn’t all quite as bad as shown in the photo. Some sites are next to grass with some small trees. It takes 90 minutes to take public transportation to the Freedom Tower in Manhattan.

I road around Manhattan on my bicycle. It is definitely the best way to see the city, or take one of the open top bus tours.

Yes I immediately looked it up on Google maps/earth. I am just absolutely astounded at what a cool thing that is! It looks like this base is multi-use which is also very cool. Biking (and walking) is definitely the way to get around the city these days with all of the construction and traffic stalled everywhere! Thanks so much for the info and all of your great pictures!

p.s. I was actually in NYC on 9/11 by coincidence. The unfolding of it was quite surreal and, of course, sad and scary. I would like to go see the Freedom Tower.

If one wants to visit downtown NYC, and Midtown for that matter, consider Liberty Harbor RV Park. It is far easier to travel to with a trailer (east of I-95) than Floyd Bennett Field. Trailers are forbidden on parkways in NYC so one has to navigate crowded, narrow Brooklyn streets. Not for the faint of heart.

It is also far easier to access Manhattan, IMO. A nice ferry ride (Paulus Hook ferry) across the Hudson River will get you there.

We stayed at Liberty Harbor RV Park (actually in Jersey City just across the Hudson) at this time last year. Called too late to get one of their limited number of hookup sites (and it was Columbus Day weekend). But, they are next to a rather large boat yard and allowed us to boon dock. The boat yard was sporatically populated by boats is storage and under repair, so they have plenty of boon dock spots. We were lucky enough to have a very sketchy looking 110V outlet they allowed us to plug into. Kept the batteries topped up.


Looks pretty bad in the pictures, but we were glad to find it. They do have 24 security guards and we felt safe. I recall only the occasional distant aircraft so it was pretty quiet. Of course, if you have a hook up location (no sewer, you have dump when leaving), you're not in the boat yard half. Our little Avenue just gets swallowed up by the large boats, but we're used to being the smallest in every park.


As mentioned, an easy commute by ferry. The last picture is on about a 1/2 mile walk to Ferries. From there, you can go to the Financial District or the Statue of Liberty.

Yikes! I had no idea that certain roads don't allow trailers! Thank you for mentioning that. And great to know about Liberty Harbor!

I love the picture of your camper amongst the boats! What a riot! And thank you so much for the info. My son lives in NYC and he is very excited about going camping with Mom not very far from home!

It is nice that there are at least two options for trailer camping when visiting New York. I tent camped at Liberty Harbor Marina RV 3 years ago. It is basically a parking lot with hookups. Here are some photos.

Access to Manhattan is great. About 5 minutes away by bike is a subway stop. About two stops later, you are at the Freedom Tower in Manhattan. While it is very convenient to Manhattan, it is expensive camping at $110 per day plus tax. They also seem to be not very reasonable if you need to cancel or change your reservation. Floyd Bennet Field has no hookups but is cheap at $30 per day ($15 with a senior pass).

While I don’t know for sure if trailers are allowed on the Belt Parkway that goes from the Verrazano Bridge to Floyd Bennet Field, I didn’t see any signs prohibiting trailers when I drove on it 3 weeks ago. I also did a quick search and the only restriction found on Wikipedia was “no commercial vehicles allowed”.

If you want to go to NYC and you are tent camping the very best place to go is Fort Wadsworth NRA CG on Staten Island. Access to Manhattan is via the free Staten Island Ferry. Here are some photos.

Great pictures. I love the little patch of grass for the tent! I did a fair amount of research on the accessibility of Bennet field because I had my heart set on going there but it's not easy. The information is a bit hard to decipher as they seem to say different things in different places. No category for Airstreams haha. I guess they don't deal with that very much--go figure. If I couldn't go on a parkway, I would be pretty hesitant to go there with a trailer even though mine is small. But will keep researching. Thanks for the photos. A parking lot with a hookup works for me!

FYI,
The NY State Parkway system differs from most other freeways and expressways located in other parts of the country in a couple distinct ways. For example, many of the original parkway roads were designed before civil engineers had experience building roads or accounting for increases in traffic volume. Due to this lack of experience, many current NYS parkway roads lack shoulders.

Also, the NYS parkway system was designed with low clearance stone bridges that only took into consideration the safe passage of automobiles. Some parkway bridges have posted clearances as low as 6’11’’. Today’s commercial vehicle drivers often get stuck and cause serious accidents due to these low clearance bridges located across the NYS Parkway system. For this reason, no commercial vehicles or tractor trailers are allowed on the NYS Parkways.
