Alternate Routes
Coming out of Knoxville area and encounter to Orlando. Looking for a good route to possibly avoid Atlanta.
The last time I drove through Atlanta it was sans trailer, mid- morning and white knuckle with chants of oh (fill in the blank). My wife kept muttering some prayer from the floorboard.

You might try US 441 to Madison, Ga. Then Ga. 83 to Forsyth, Ga. to I-75. I have travel on all of that route at one time or another. Good roads.

Where are you picking 441 up at? Surely you aren't running up over and through the NP and dropping down to catch same.

We do travel 441 thru the NP to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I have not towed our trailer that route. I know several people that do tow their's that route for camping at Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Cades Cove. I-40 to Waynesville, then Waynesville to Franklin to 441 will work also.

TXS. I'm also familiar with the NPS area of Gatlinburg ... I don't think I would be comfortable towing over the same. I'm looking at the route off of 40. Best to you

Hi again Mike. I enjoy playing with google maps. It shows a alternate route avoiding Atlanta completely a bit to the west. I put in Knoxville - Tallahassee then Tallahassee to Orlando. Looks pretty easy and only about 20 miles longer than the direct route through Atlanta. I'm pretty adventurous even while towing our Airstream and find the secondary roads to be just fine. ( Oh yeah, not always but usually that is.).

Hey Friend - I'm going to check that out. I looked at running 40 to Ashville and dropping down from there as we are very familiar with the Clemson area (our oldest son earned his MBA there courtesy of the US Army).

Hi from AZ. . . I guess I should dis-qualify myself, after living in ATL many years, but if you pick your time & go right thru town, it's so no big deal. . . Sunday morning was my 'get the trailer outa town' favorite. . . or any day after midnite ! The alternatives mentioned are way too long for me. . . regards, Craig

After midnight ... I actually have done that one during a motorcycle trip that included a stop in Dallas/Ft Worth. Riding there was like the Death Race movie.

Getting to I-285 by 6 am you should breeze through the middle of Atlanta on I-75. We do it all the time. An alternate would be to take US 27 South out of Chattanooga. Not a bad drive. You can stay on it all the way to Florida.

I drove through Atlanta in June at 12:am, midnight. We got stuck downtown on I-85/75 in a jam for an hour. I will not be going that way again!
An alternate route Knoxville to Orlando:
I-40 to I-26
I-26 to I-95
I-95 to I-4
If you would like to add some rural to this route, look at picking up US-301 from Orangeburg, SC. You can stay on US-301 until just before Ocala FL where it starts to get congested, then jump over to I-75. I take this route when I'm not in a hurry.

I white knuckled it through Atlanta one time in my 345LE. Now I get an hour or so outside the city and rest until about 2am, then make the run through Atlanta, traffic free. I stop an hour outside the city and go back to bed. This works nicely every time I try it.
