2005 Ford SuperDutys

I ran across this while doing some research for a new truck. I'm especially interested in the new factory built in brake controller, not to mention the pumped up V10.

Just talked to my dealer and the 2005 F-250 goes into production 15July and will be in dealer showrooms mid Aug. It sounds like they took the BEST Truck and made it much better.

Gosh, I wish you hadn't posted that!

I'm trying like heck to keep my 2000 F250 7.3L PSD with 65,000 miles on it (until I pay off my new 2004 30' Classic Ltd), and here you go tempting us with stuff like that!

John

ps. But I enjoyed reading it nonetheless.

Hope Chevy steps up to the plate. No rib on Ford, I'm just a GM guy.

It is a nice truck though and the numbers on paper are really good.

Speaking of Chevys and Fords ( I'm a Chevy man)

My mechanics said that they saw a recent T.V. show
where they tested towing worthyness of G.M. and Ford.
Both manufacturers late models were rated unstable on curves.
( While Chevys towing capcity for the 1500s has gone up 1400lbs
since year 2000) Did anyone else see that show that can
summarize it more better than me?
The built in brake controller sounds cool. I am curious as to
the method of activation.

No, and I would put little faith is a "TV" show test. However, I have an '04 Chevy K25000 diesel and am very mindful of the high center of gravity.

You want to tackle curves at high speeds? Get a BMW.

I am not about to stick my head in the sand just because some bad news
was televised, or because of one mans brand loyalty. It's good to
know the limitations of your rig without pushing the envelope yourself
to find out.

V-10

It's about time Ford did something with that V-10. I test drove one in a F250 and it couldn't get out of it's way. It was like night and day between the Chevy 2500hd with 8.1 and the V-10. I'd really like to see what it will do now in real life rather than on paper.

I didn't really mean to praise or knock Ford or Chevy. I was just curious
as to what the test results were. I don't want to drive fast around curves.
But if certain years were prone to rolls, I want to know. Actually , the kids goof on me for driving slow when I am not even towing.

That would be all pickup trucks ever made. No joke, and I'm not trying to make fun of anyone here. The 4X4s are the worst, as they sit up so much higher. Some undoubtedly perform better than others, but even the best handling heavy duty pickup truck is going to have cornering abiltity at the "lousy" end of the spectrum.

Those of us who use our trucks as daily drivers really have to be aware of their limitations.

On the other hand, my old Porsche 911 was a really poor tow vehicle.

I'm just saying that the competition between the big 3 only helps us get vehicles capable of towing heavier loads with a little less effort. Sure, I want a performance oriented truck that is capable of pulling my 31' Excella. What I definately don't want is a vehicle that does not live up to its expectations.

The Chevy 2500hd disappointed many people because it was designed to sit lower to the ground for ease in getting in and out. I'd rather not give my truck a 4-6 inch lift because it serves my purpose while hunting and does an excellent job of towing my trailer.

The Ford F250s I have seen sit higher but I've never personally seen it or a Chevy in a roll over. I did see a Dodge 2500 in a roll over but based on the size trailer he was towing and that it occurred at the beginning of a curve, it could have been caused by the driver not being alert or any number of reasons.

everyone who drives pickups fast know the back end will pass you long before you ever roll them over!

i'd prefer "headlights tailights headlights tailights" to "ground sky ground sky" anytime!

John,
You remember the story about my '92 Z71 4X4? My 17 yr. old kid swerved to miss a deer which jumped off an embankment onto a silty surface back road. The rear came around and the truck slid sideways UNTIL the brand new (less than a 1000 miles) Dunlop Rover RV tires grabbed. The truck flipped onto its top and slid into a ditch nose first. It was at stock heigth and outfitted with the same size tires from the factory. If only he had hit the brakes and hadn't swerved.

Emergency driving

Venison goes will with beer. Or beer is just fine on its own.

On the serious note, My wife and talk about what we would do in any obstruction would suddenly appear in front of our "package" Fully loaded we are close to 12,000 pounds with an est length of something in the mid 30 foot length. We drive as a team, if she has to take off her seat belt we pull over. (had a friend that was ejected through the winshield while she was looking for something , she did live)
But we are both looking for any activity that would be potentialy dangerous. As a team we will drive over or through any object that is smaller than us. Our only exception is human life. We will risk our lives when a human is in something infront of us. Any thing else we will run over and sort it out later.

Abe,

Although not as big as a deer, we were on our way home from the midwest rally and what looked like a possum, ran out into the road from the shoulder. At first it looked like a garbage bag, but going 62mph I came upon it fairly quickly.

I was sad by the results as I hit it, however, I was happy that I did not panic. I tried to get onto the shoulder, mindful of the other lane that was full and watching the construction signs on the shoulder. I did not slam on the brakes, although I did apply them. In the end, it was either us or the animal and I had to choose it. By some grace, there was no damage, but the animal was clearly dead.

It's hard not to, but you have to try not to panic. If I had not been thinking, I would have slammed on the brakes, swerved, etc which I've been told would have been deadly. I think the key is everything in moderation...steering, braking, etc. No quick sharp manuvers, even if it means a head on with a deer or other animal.

Lightbulb Driving class or forum

Eric,
Do you think that this subjec needs its own thread. I am an Emergency Medical Teck and so many times people are killed when they swerve to miss some animal. I have seen many a car wreck that resulted in loss of human life and the animal was still killed.
From the advice I learned here I would run over any thing to avoid rolling "the package" Suburbans are tough, and I can buy more parts, but I just went out on the road with out thinking I bet I would have swerved to miss something and realize way to late that I was doomed..........

It couldn't hurt.

In my case I was glad I did what I could within reason and kept a cool head. It all happens so fast, and one wrong move could start a chain reactoion. Maybe the mods could split this off?
