What is this???
I just posted some Homecoming pictures on the web but one thing we found (that we missed on our initial inspections) was these two patches on the back of the trailer.
I jumped on the rear bumper and it was solid with no signs that I could see of there ever being a rear separation problem.
We will replace these patches because they look unsightly and don't have Olympics holding them in. Once we do that we will know for sure what this is. It seems unlikely that it could be anything else but an attempt at reinforcement.
It was a surprise to have missed this the first 3 or 4 times we saw the trailer!

Looks like a PO needed to get at something behind the patch?
Good Luck!

dumbo ears
those look like a version of the typical holes cut in order to put bolts in to hold the frame to the body

That's what I think. I wonder if it was a preemptive effort or if there actually was a problem...

Those are the infamous elephant ear patches done by an amateur...IMHO
There are two large bolts that hold the whole assembly together back there, that may have been what they were after. Some owners did the repair as a preemptive measure...mine did not.

We are planning to put a better looking patch. Hmm, wonder if a couple of copper flames would look good??? Or is that too weird?

Of course that wouldn't work due to the corrosive effects of dissimilar metals - especially copper with a voltage potential of -0.345 volts combined with Aluminum with its +1.30 volts. That would equal a potential difference of 1.645 volts. that combined with some sort of electrolyte to help things along would a great combination for an expensive repair later. Still I think it could look cool...

You could mount twin flamethrowers back there, it would cure any problems you would have with tailgaters.

Here's a creative idea that one member here has done to cover a dent on her trailer...it isn't copper, but it is still pretty neat...
If you want copper, why not just coat the back of it?

Wow! very nice!
I don't think that it is as easy as just putting on a coating of some sort. I have actually looking into it. Any point of contact will cause a reaction so it has to be perfectly isolated.
But this dent repair is real nice. It has me thinking!
