I am curious about the sources you mentioned that have fitted Airstream sheets. I'd like to check them out even though I will probably just use the garters. Also I'd like a source for replacement curtains.

I have a 74 Overlander. When I get time I can measure along the exterior of the upholstry if you are still interested. I have the rear bath model. This is important, as the other interior configurations had different sized gauchos. Once again, let me know if you still need some meaurements.

I'm planning on re-upholstering my gaucho cushions. Which is better: building the cushions with 4-5" foam and adding a 2" memory foam on top to sleep on? Or building the new cushions to incorporate the memory foam into the cushions themselves when re-upholstering?

I replaced my mattress this summer with a memory foam mattress and it is great..purched from www.meritmark.com ..very good price..

We built the memory foam into the cushions in our Safari. We couldn't be happier with the results - very comfortable to sit and sleep on. We did a 5" foam base (fairly firm) with 2" of memory foam on top. We used spray adhesive recommended by our foam shop to glue the two layers together so they wouldn't shift once inside the covers.

Perfect Mel! That's what I needed to hear.....thank you very much! I was thinking along the same lines: firm foam base + memory foam -- just wasn't sure of the recommended sizes. Do you think I can get away with 4"+2"? Do you think the 5" is over-sized for you? Or just right?!!

I think 4" + 2" would work just fine. The mattress in our Caravel has that combination and it's very comfortable too (although that one was purchased from foamsource.com and was already glued together. We just trimmed it to fit our bed area).

We decided to add a 2 inch "mattress topper" of 4 pound "visco foam" over the curved edge inner spring mattress (full junior..) in our '88. I also discovered that Overstock.com sells them for half the price or less of any store in our area, including several bedding and bath giants and Costco... Price for full size piece was less than $50.. Trim to fit with metal shears, and it works great. Warmth or coolth, and soft without that sinking feeling... In fact, we liked it so much we did same for 12 year old King mattress in house... May not last more than 3 to 5 years, but price much more reasonable than other options...

We just purchased a 75 Landyacht last week. It stinks from mothballs, smoker, and dust from the last 10 years or so. I need to replace the front pull out sofa - not sure what to replace it with, we are going to have to be very tight on spending. I was considering using my bissell shampooer to clean the old mattresses, and then buying zipped mattress covers - extra long. And then trying out the t-shirt type knit sheets and see if they fit over the curved mattresses. (Back bedroom). For the front sofa-sleeper, it is in terrible looking shape - maybe need to rip off the upholstery and clean and recover - but I really don't think it makes out to be a very big bed - is there any other solution? Is there a place I can buy a sofa/sleeper that will fit in the trailer? Thanks.

We have the front sofa or rather had one. The mattress was one of the most comfortable things we ever slept on, even though it folds in half. Small but sweet. If money is a concern, and when isn't it, you might try to clean.

Sorry to hear about reeking trailer.. Assume odors are in the carpet and curtains and other fabrics, in addition to Mattresss and couch..

Couches are well fitted into fronts of Airstreams, and worth trying to save rathern than replace. They disassemble pretty easily, and once disassembled, can be taken to variety of upholstery options (cheaper than RV upholstery specialists..) for new foam and fabric. I'd urge recover and replace foam rather than try to replace entire couch, though it might also be time to consider building in dinette and losing sleeping place, if you don't need it. That is another popular option.

As for rear beds, mattress cover won't fully contain odors, but would be a start. You might find local cleaner who could clean them and get rid of some of the odor. Safety pins on back side work wonders for fitting to curved dimensions... Unfitted single sheets can just be tucked under as needed...

I don't know if OP is still around but I am wondering how latex foam density is measured and what options there are for customizing that. Also, would a foam appropriate for a couch be to firm for a bed? How do you find that balance?
