Well, I finished the frame yesterday.I had been waiting for the grey water tank to come.It arrived last week and I was able to weld in the last crossmember to allow the tank to fit.I'll post a few more pictures soon.

Nice, very nice, indeed. Great work!
You're a few steps ahead of me - I'm still removing rivets to lift the shell off.
Keep us posted!

Very nice, but I sure hope I don't have to do it.

New axles?

greg176,

You mentioned having bought new axles from a Calgary based company whose web-site is www.standens.com. Are your axles the leaf spring type? The comapnies web-site says that they can also supply rubber torsion axles. I was just wondering if they are an alternative source for torsion axles.

They are the rubber torsion axles.Standens has a great reputation around here and I would not hesitate to use them again.I had the axles delivered to my home in three days made to my specs for one third the price of the henschens.

I checked the web site www.standens.com , it said they had torsion axels but offered no information on them, did I miss a link?

No you did not miss a link. You have to contact them with dimensions you need. The main reason I bought from Standens was that they are in Canada and saved me customs and delivery problems, if you are in the states it would be easier to buy from an American supplier.

If you check the Standens site I think you will find they are a Canadian distributor for Dexter Axle. http://www.dexteraxle.com/find_a_distributor

This raises a question that has been on my mind....how would one go about getting replacement axles from Dexter? I know, a big selling point with our friend Andy is that you just tell him what trailer you have, and the Henshens will just "fit". But they're kind of spendy. anyway...how do you get a Dexter that'll fit? bolt holes line up, allignment, shock mounts in the right place....anyone done this?

Excellent Job Greg!! I am in search for an A/S and was initially worried about finding one in good shape. The more I peruse the forums on this site, the less I really worry about it because of all the great info everyone posts on this site along with pictures. It is nice to know that if I jump into a project like this that I would not be doing it blind and totally alone because I could always fall back on the great resources and experiences of others on this site. Thanks to everyone for knowledge and expertice that they contribute to this site.

Looks like some great frame work. I'd almost be too scared to tackle that job myself. It's good to see that you have the confidence to tackle such an enormous task.

How much difference in frame weight do you figure you have now?

John, I figure I reduced the weight of the frame by at least 100lbs because of the huge steel box that the PO had on the old frame for the grey water tank(I assume it was for a grey water tank as there was none in the box).I will be trying to keep things as light as possible as I rebuild things.I have weigh slips from the dump as I used trailer to bring old interior to the dump.I will weigh it again as soon as it is road worthy and as I build interior.I am anxious to see the final weight.
I finished installing floor this weekend except I was short about 15 elevator bolts(more on the way). Now I have to line up shell with floor then install "U" channels. The shell is being very stubborn.
I've attached a photo of the grey tank installed.

When I built my Land Rover I had everything made from steel galvanized. New farme as well as some body trim came galvanized but the firewall, radiator panel wheel rims. The charged by the pound to dip it so it was only a couple of hundred dollars. I also painted the galvanized fame with POR 15. The rest of the body Panels are rivited aluminum much like an Airstream. I knew that I'd be long gone before it ever rusted out.

That sounds good. I thought that you would keep the weight issue to a minimum by the sounds of your previous post. Just thought I would ask,
Your work appears to be very professional, have you ever done anything simular before?

Uhhhh ohhh...your catching up! I better get the move on! LOL

Nice work Greq!

As for getting the body back on. Jack up the bumper and the frame will sag in the middle and it will drop right on. Attache the ends and slowly lower the the bumper till everythign along the sides line up.
