250 Classic with 6.5L Diesel, like to get info
Hello Airstreamers
I am new in this Forum and new owner of an 250 Classic (1992). I live in Germany. And the streamer is one of three what was made for Germany. Original with 6,2L Diesel. My has now a 6,5L non turbo.
The total miles are 122tsd. With the new 6,5L only 17tsd.
Where is the diffrents? Spezial the sparparts I Need for Service.
If I order parts, I will order the right ons.
I have a long to do list. First is Service. Second is to improve the AS.
On Thing is allready done from the last owner. He put a RETARDER inside.
A very helpfull brakesystem. It can save 80% of the brake. And Long time dounhil, you dont Need the regular brake.
The AS is in realy nice condition. But I like to hold it in this conditon for the future. So I will do a good Service and need your Experience.
I like to get Infos as much as possible. I am reading also many Threads in this Forum, but is not easy to understand everything. But I see, this Forum is very helpful with many friendly People.
Not every Forum is like this one. Many other I will never write.
And If you has any question, let me know.
My first tour I will start in march, then I can share more of my impressions.
all best

The 6.2 was the second generation GM light truck diesel.
The 6.5 was the third generation, only available naturally aspirated.
The 6.2 made only 130 HP, and the 6.5 made a bit more naturally aspirated, and a bit more again with the later turbocharged version.
I think the 6.5s were fairly reliable, my 6.2 was pretty reliable aside from broken starters motor housings and one failing of the Roosamaster fuel injection pump.
Brevi tempore!

Really nice coach! I've never heard of a Classic built to Euro-specs. So cool.
Parts should be plentiful and readily available.

It looks almost factory fresh. Obviously this unit has been well cared for and garaged, -or- it has been phenomenally restored.
Very nice!

There was an Airstream promotional item on ebay a few year ago which advertised the 250 for sale in Europe. It sold to a chap in the Netherlands - wish I had bought it. I do have a two or three page article in German about the 250 by the original German importers. I'll dig it out, scan it and send it over when I get a chance. The 6.2 diesels were made in the US. Airstream imported 220v appliances from Europe e.g Dometic in Sweden, fitted them in the US and then exported the vehicles back to Europe. The last ever 250 was a burgundy model made for the conductor of the Wolfsburg orchestra. It was owned by a guy in Holland, but I have lost track of who has it now.... Nick (unofficial archivist for the Airstream 250).

Also, note that Airstream UK and lots of other independents can fit the panels if you ever damage them, so you always have options.

Yes, I have spoken to Klaus Keitel. Nice van. I will be driving through Germany on holiday this year, so would welcome some recommendations on nice places. We head for the Italian Lakes, but I fancy stopping off in the Black Forest.
I will scan that article and send it over to you.

It would also be worth contacting Custom Manufacture.

I have tried on several occaisions, but they have not responded - perhaps you coud call them. We should check whether they have kept any of the parts from their modified 250.

I already get in contact with that company. I spoke to a guy he was responsible for the rest of the company.
Years ago they gone bankrupt. The AS parts are sold long time ago, nothing left.
