22fb Lower segment protector mounting advice
Hello all,
For those of you that have installed or have had installed the lower segment protector for a 22fb what’s the hold back or hinge situation. The dealer I bought my segment protectors from supplied me with 10 of the holdbacks that are @3” with the acorn nut located near the top. I have seen other holdback brackets that have the acorn nut in the middle and I’ve seen a 5” holdback as well. Also I’m getting conflicting info about whether or not to use the piano hinge.
Here is a photo from out of door marts web page showing the three different holdbacks.
My question is do I need a piano hinge for the 22 sport and how many and which holdbacks to use?

After doing some more research and making some calls here’s what I’ve come up with.
The segment protectors I have are the European style and are part number
99900M-439
99900M-440
Here a pic of one
These are usually mounted with an expanding nut, or weld nut, of some sort as shown in this video:
https://youtu.be/HHEmxxGqNlE
The dealer suggests using holdbacks and not weld nuts.
The dealer I purchased my wrap protectors from also suggests using these wrap protectors because the other style, 109325-100, with piano hinge can interfere with the A frame if you want to mount the piano hinge on the main front support/rivet line. Because sport body is narrow.
Can anyone verify this?
I was sent a picture by another dealer that suggested these larger ones could fit but the photo he sent appears to show interference at the A frame of the large protector.
Could anyone with a 16 or 22 sport and wrap protector post some photos or share their experiences with either style of wrap? Specifically which one you have and how it’s mounted?
I found this photo of a 22 sport with the large ones mounted with hinge on rivet line so I’m starting to wonder if the dealer I purchased my smaller ones from is confused.
Thanks

Segment Protectors
Mounted our segment protectors 4 years ago. Make sure the piano hinge is mounted into the wall bracing for strength. Also check that you have the height set so the rub guard on the protector lines up with the rub guard on the trailer. The shape of our protectors matched the curve of the trailer so I did not use a standoff in the middle, just used two standoffs on the ends.

Segment Protectors
Hi, We have a 2019, 22 Sport FBR. We purchased the Airstream at an Airstream Dealer in Baton Rounge (The RV Shop). Before taking delivery, we had the dealer install new full size Geunine Airstream Segment Protectors with 1ea. 5¨hookback and 2ea. 3¨ holdbacks that are the exact same type you described at the beginning of your poste.
I highly recommend the piano hinge, because it is so easy to clean. These protectors are made for a 22 sport and do not interfere with the A’frame. We´ve only had our trailer for 7 months but have already traveled more than 3,500 miles this year and have had no issues with these segment protectors.
In summary, we confirm you are able to install a full size segment protectors with a piano hinge, three holdbacks with acron nuts without any interference with the A-Frame. Will try to send photos on next post

This is what I was looking for, confirmation that it will work. Thanks for taking the time to post. Any chance of a photo or two? Specifically of the piano hinge along or near the rivet line?
Thanks

Now I have to see if the dealer I bought mine from will order those. No sure why that dealer is steering me towards the other ones so hard. He seemed resistant to taking the ones I have back and ordering those when I mentioned it.

We called Airstream head office customer service and they provided us with the correct part number based on our serial number which we gave to our Airstream dealer to order.

Thanks for the post @kootenayken and @alwayshome I ended up having a nice conversation with the dealer i purchased my rockguards from. He said he has the bigger guards in stock and would gladly swap them out for the ones I have.
I like the larger ones they provide more coverage and also mount in a way that seems to be better then the well nuts. I’ll follow up on here when I install the larger ones.
Once again thanks for all the assistance.

Love the look of those and the protection. Any chance of a pictorial documentation of your install when you get to it? I used a bunch of plus nuts and riv-nuts on my Ford Transit 4x4 cargo area installs but would really like to see how you do this.

Hi Always Home,
I am looking at getting a set of these for our 2019 Sport 22FB. I looked at the Euro style ones that are bolted on to the narrow body of the Sport. I like the piano hinge and lower valance design of the units that you have.
The part number that I was given was 109325-100 for the piano. hinge style that you have. I am wondering if you know what the part/kit number was for yours?
If anyone can confirm that this is the correct kit, that would be very helpful in getting these ordered.

I installed these on my 2018 22’ FB. I got them from Colonial Airstream and they were dropped shipped directly to me from the factory. Worked out well. I’m sure they will set you up with the right part. You will need a pop riveter if you don’t have one.
