Frustrating bathroom extension

Finally had it with the bathroom extension. How have some of you fastened it in the extended position.

We made a wedge that is cut to fit at the top of the door, fitting between the wall and top of the door. We hold it there with a piece of Velcro. East to remove if we ever want to - though we haven't in years.

It was something STUPID that Airstream did on older Interstates, 2012 to about 2016 I think.

The wall next to the door was hinged along the side of the door jamb. The hinge let the panel swing out into the hall about 4", giving you more width at the back of the toilet - the area where one has zero use for extra width.

MIKE - Ah, ok, I glad I was spared of this.

TITUS - well, maybe AS thought an elephant would have use for extra width, but then same elephant can't squeeze through the bath door anyways, so you right that it's useless

In my 2011 Interstate, one of the first things I did was fix that fiasco. I removed the closeouts first (looking at the door from the inside, that's the top, right-hand, and lower pieces that close out the view from the outside attached to the larger, single flat board that is attached to the hinge). I can't remember, but I think I then took the hardware and reversed it, and there was a small, about 3" x 1" piece of plywood that came from somewhere, and I used a screw into the door and the panel below it to attach it to keep the door from rattling. The door was kept in the closed position because, as pointed out, it did not substantially increase the room inside. With this fix, the toilet seat could be raised and lowered without opening the swing out door.

One of many, "what in the world were they thinking" designs.

On my 2014.5, I removed the latch and installed strong magnets that held the extension in the extended position. If I wanted to clean around the toilet area, I simply would swing the extension all the way out for complete access to that area.

Believe it or not, the magnets I installed were intended to make shoes easy to put on without tying them. The magnets had holes for shoestrings and I fastened them to the woodwork with screws through those holes. They were plenty strong for this use.
