I also did the 3M and within a week a rock hit my windshield and caused what Safelite called a target chip. He said they usually don't spread so I opted to wait on replacement and redoing the film. My insurance, state farm said they would cover both if I decide to do it. I figure with as much traveling as I'm doing, one more is likely and I'll do it then.

I was traveling years ago in a Volvo and something hit my windshield. With the noise and the impact, I too thought I was shot, even checked my chest! The crack was similar to yours but I was on open road. Insurance said a rock can do that if it flew off a vehicle. The combined velocities made it sound huge.

Back to 3M ....huge difference in the temp of my rig! Best investment ever. I did the windshield and 2 side windows. Did not opt for dark tint since illegal in some states. Windshield is just below clear and the sides are tinted just enough to shade my arms a little while driving.
