More Wiring Re-route

More Wiring Re-route

When I had the entire dashboard apart, I uncovered yet another wiring job that just was not right. Not sure what these wires connect to. But they were sitting under the driver sill plate, but above sill trim/substrate. And it is being held in by tiny pieces of painter's green tape clearly torn off by hand. They were not even cut with scissors and/or long strips to cover the entire length of wiring. The wires were also perilously close to the 3 sill plate screw mounting holes. All it takes is a couple of mm slip of the screw/driver and 'nicked' wires is the result. To make matters worse, the plastic sill trim substrate has a wide molded-in groove/channel for wires. I can only imagine MB designed it for purpose of additional after-market wire routing. Ugggh! Unplanned work, but once discovered, I had to fix it. Much better now

Another job well done... that is crazy that is was just painters tape holding it down. That degrades super fast and then you left with free floating wires. If you need a side hustle... come on our to Texas... I could keep you busy for a long time with my 2017...

TOBBUN - I only do it as a labor of love for vehicles I work on, which is probably why AS does not. One has to love it to spend so much time on things that are completely hidden & no one will ever see (except of course me). My wife does not like me taking apart our brand new rv piece-by-piece like this right off the lot but understands my need to do it and it's benefitting her & our family.

This was my latest state of dash-truction as of last weekend. I opened up my VB Air controller in order to locate a perma dash install location for it. Then upon coming across these wires got me sidetracked into some wiring re-route/cleanup. Looks bad at first but all done now. But didn't get any time to do anything about VB Air controller, ran out of time. Trying again today

Down to the wire at Christmas

Down to the wire at Christmas

And while my wife, daughters, and entire family rush to get their last minute Christmas gifts, I use the waiting time to do some last minute re-wires and mini-mods. Picking up from last post of VB Air controller re-wire - finally found my preferred perma location for it - between steering wheel & ignition key. It is the most logical place for me. Since I use/control it 100% of the time while sitting on the driver's seat, then it makes sense to put it as close to steering wheel as I can.

Remove 4 switch blanks. NOTE: The red wire is for Fusion kill-switch, which has to be relocated to the left side of steering wheel.

Drill holes on upper 2 switch blanks and bolt controller holster onto them, use lock nuts behind switch blanks.

Easy snap-on/snap-off for install/removal. 2 top and 1 right bottom switch blanks all back in. The 1 left bottom switch hole is left un-covered to allow coiled cable storage/retrieval. The nice thing about using the switch blanks is I can change my mind later on & un-bolt controller holster and snap-on new undrilled switch blanks.

Disconnect chassis battery via under-dash main disconnect. Un-screw VB Air contoller back/face plate. Un-solder 4 control wires so that coiled cable can route through via the left-lower switch blank hole. Re-solder back all control wires.

Stuff all excess coiled cable back behind switch blank holes. Any need to pull controller outside driver door is easily done by just pulling out the coiled cable. NOTE - it is a lot easier to pull the entire length of coiled cable out than hiding them back in. Hiding them back in requires a 1-finger process done an inch at a time. So may take couple minutes.

Reconnect battery disconnect cable. Assuming no smoke/fire, test operation of all manual & automatic VB Air functions. Perma location done. Much cleaner install, entire coiled cable hidden. My job here is done. Not a single dangling cable around my dash.

Wiring Hot Mess Cleaned Up

Thanks for the inspiration Alex, finally got around to taking care of this "accident waiting to happen" under the driver & passenger seats. Unfortunately one did for me; you may notice two red butt-end wire connectors in the upper right corner of the Passenger Side After image. My MB dealer wanted $ 316.00 for that fix, I accomplished it for <$ 2.00 & some time. Although to my MB dealer's defense I'm assuming they were planning on replacing the entire wire harness versus the simple repair I made.

All protected & tucked away now.
