Question

"need to tow 75-80"

I'd stay on the pad.

I'd do 120 if I could :-). When I see 1000 mile ahead of me it's time to kick her in gear.. I only have so much vacation so I have to get to my destination so I can relax kick back and smell the roses! As they say - do as you feel comfortable or don't do it at all..

I normally try to stay away from the interstates unless we're "trapped" and have to use them. But on the open road I keep it right at 65mph - seems like 60-65mph yields a nice round number for gas mileage... 10mpg. Easy to figure out in your head if you have enough gas to get where you're going!

If no one is around me and its nice out I drive about 62mph. The engine runs about 1700 rpm at that speed when towing our 22'. There are times Ill do 75 mph. I try to remember that Im on vacation and Im not in a hurry

Obviously, people can tow at whatever speed they feel is safe and sensible, although I have to wince a bit at people advocating exceeding the speed limit, even by 10%. Each to their own, I suppose.

I'll do 100 kph (62 mph) on the Interstates and usually 80 kph (50 mph) on the back roads. The tow feels comfortable at those speeds and the gas mileage is still in the realms of reality. Also, I tow for pleasure so I see no need to rush. Curiously, those speeds match most of the prevailing speeds limits in this part of the world so I tow with impunity

I average out around 60. Any faster minimizes my ability to react to a situation. In addition it's a matter of fuel costs. There is a tipping point and pushing past this point has the down side of more fuel.

I am a 65 or below type of guy. The trailer and tires are rated for these speeds who am I to think I know more than the companies that manufacture them. If something happens I know I was doing the right thing and not putting my fellow man in danger due to my negligence or arrogance.

Exactly what I do. I spent all my working years (close to 2 million miles as an OTR truck driver) trying to make time and make deliveries. I swore during those years that when I retired I would throw my keys into the woods. But then I got an Airstream . . . Sal

Just completed a 4k trip south and back. TV is 6cyl 4 runner. Usual tow speed is 55 to 65. MPG is 12.2 except in colder climes when it goes to 11 mpg. Never seem to notice a difference into or against the wind, but I average every couple of days.
An informative thread. An airspeed indicater, really?
Paul
