24' Argosy chassis wiring
Hello,
New member, first post. Been lurking for some time.
Our '73 24' Argosy has wiring issues where the trailer cable exits the chassis at the hitch. Previous damage and repairs has left the wires too short to be repaired properly and I can't pull anymore slack out of the hollow chassis section.
What I need to know is where do the wires exit the chassis section.
I need to cut the bellypan and replace the wiring.
So where on the pan should I cut my access hole?
Thanks in advance
Peter

If the '73 is anything like my '77, you don't need to open the belly pan. The wires connect to a terminal block behind the streetside dinette. You'll have to remove that side of the dinette to get to it, but after that pulling a new cable through should be fairly straightforward.

Hi,
I ran right out to check.
Our Argosy has the couch with the water pump under the streetside.
I looked all over but there's nothing there, it's quite accessable. the pump wire goes through the inner skin, no other wiring.
Must be different.
Thanks for the reply.

Peter,
What is in the front end of your Argy? Behind the front gaucho on my AS there is a square white box mounted on the front wall, IIRC it is riveted on, all of my wiring goes into that box. It is about 6"x6"x2".

I'm waiting with baited anticipation! What will it be?? (Sorry, too much Sav Blanc tonite ). If all else fails, look for a small panel/door/access port under the front, curbside. That's where it all comes together in the AS's. If you have that, you could snake new cable to that spot from the A-frame/tongue aree and have a new pig tail.

No luck,
Under my gaucho is the water tank the full width of the coach and behind that the slide out plastic trays.
The water tank is curved at the ends and closely mates to the inner skin.
No room for a junction box.
Wow, either of the above options would have been very welcome.
I've been through every locker and can't find anything that seems promising.

Just in from lying in the grass under the coach.
No access panels either side.
My wiring dissapears into the streetside frame section if that helps.

I suggest you PM or catch the attention of Pattersontoo (known as Lou). He is the local Jedi master of Argosy's (thanks to JeffTerry for that one!).

It's gotta be there. The square box that wahoonc describes is just like mine. It will definitely be on the streetside somewhere forward. Can you describe what appears in the area of the water pump?

My vehicle to trailer wiring is a double ended cable that plugs into a fitting on the body just above the A frame. The wiring arrives at that point via the roadside frame. It comes up the frame, thru a hole in the floor/channel into the wall, transitions at the white box, then to the plug.

Hello Peter
Peter .. My husband has replaced ours .. have a 75 26' Argosy with front gaucho.. it goes through the Aframe channel into the underbelly and up thru the floor between the outer and inner walls , around the street side to a junction box at the end of the gaucho.. Hope this helps.. for our Argosy's 30th birthday this month we have completely refurbished her..... Annie

OK, here are some pictures,
The root of the problem
Under the gaucho
The streetside, showing the pump. I imagine the pump originaly went under the gaucho but the PO made a little box aft to house it, one of my projects it to put that right.
This little junction box in the bathroom closet houses the polarity light next to the battary box.
I havn't opened it, but can't imagine the trailer light wiring is in here.
Hopefull these are of some help.

I do know that on some of the older Argosys they did not use the standard wiring block that most of us are used to seeing in the more popular mid-1970's Argosys.
You will be able to find it along the street side on the inside of the trailer.
If it is not there, then it may very well be further back.
At any rate, you should be able to follow the cable up into the trailer and follow it. That is something an old GM Electrician taught me; "If a cable starts somewhere, it has to end somewhere".
Keep in mind that your trailer is over 30 years old and has probably seen a lot of "repairs" over the years. Sometimes they are improvements and other times they are done without much thought or common sense.

Yikes I see my pictures didn't come through
Here they are as attachments

Ithought I could be clever and add the images in-line after uploading them as attachments, then deleting them from the attachments.
The forum software also deleted the images from the server but I saw them because they were in my cache.

Thanks,
I guess I'll keep digging, but I can't follow the wires from the A frame, they disappear when the frame changes from a channel to a box section underneath the LPG tanks.
Perhaps this is a modification, are they normally C section all the way?
I'll have to see what I can do with the belly pan.
Thanks for all your help everybody. A great first post experience!
I run a Land Rover forum and I really like this one, I'm tempted to use this software.

I don't think that the frame changes are a prior owner modification, my 1979 Safari has a boxed tongue and a c channel frame, my 1954 Liner has a c channel tongue and frame.

Frames usually do not change.
The owner modification I was referring to is with the electrical from the TV plug not the frame.
