Jack Knife sofa

I have a 1986 Sovereign 27' that has a unique interior design with a 'jack knife sofa' along the curb side of the trailer allowing for more cabinet storage on the other side. My problem is the mechanism in the jack knife sofa is detached so we have to open and close the sofa with difficulty. Not sure if there are springs missing. It appears to be a mechanism similar to a futon bed. Any ideas?

Pictures would help, not sure what a jack knife sofa is? Normally the back of the sofa comes forward to make the bed, no springs.

Here are 2 pics. I've searched for the appropriate name for this couch and jack-knife seems to fit. It's not really a 'gaucho' style. It appears to have a similar mechanism to a 'futon' type couch.
