I have a 1981 EXCELLA and tried to replace the shocks today. was able to get the first 2 unbolted but can not remove the end attached to the axle bracket. The repair book says to twist them round, I tried that, no good.
I then measured the width of the top of shock and measured the distance between bolt and frame rails. the top of shock bracket is 1/4 to 3/8 inch wider then distance between bolt and frame rails. The only way I can see to change shocks is to drop axles, or cut away part of frame
I don't think i am missing anything, but if someone has a trick that i don't know I am all ears.
I would just as soon drop axles when I need new ones.
Pry the rubber grommet out of the old shock. If they are original they will be in two halves.
Some shocks require the bending of the bracket to gain enough clearance.
Soak the threads with penetrating oil to avoid breaking the bolt.
