water heater/toilet question

Hi! I am a newbie and have a couple questions. First we have a 1975 31 ft land yacht. It has the electric water heater located in bathroom. Anyway when we went to look at it before buying I know that I saw it on. There was red lights flashing. Anyway when we started hooking everything up at home, we noticed that the prongs on the plug in cord were taped with black tape. I then noticed that the prongs had tiny wires wrapped around each under the black tape. I also can not find to to plug it in at. The cord runs through a hole into the closet but no receptacle. Could this be plugged into an extension cord and run into the furnace closet? There is no furnace.
Second question is how do you hook the toilet up? I see the place behind the toilet to connect a hose but once I connect that I don't know what to hook it into. Thanks so much.

Hi Cassarey

Welcome to the forums.

The stock configuration in 1975 was for a gas water heater. The electric must have been added later. Some people add aftermarket electric elements to gas water heaters which is probably what you have. I do not believe these are safe even when properly installed, and poor quality installations are abundant. I would suggest you remove it and rely on the gas.

The toilet should not require any hookup per se. It is plumbed into the trailer water system.

Sounds to me that some modifications have taken place.

The very best way to learn what was changed, I would suggest that you invest in a 1975 service manual.

They are cheap and will answer a ton of questions.

Parts stocking dealers can order that manual for you.
