They should have pulled an Airstream. They might have gotten even faster.

Perry.

Some 40 plus years ago, Airstream said they towed an Airstream at 100 mph.

As a test, when I was with Caravanner Insurance Company, the insurance division of Airstream, I towed a 1970 31 foot loaded Airstream, with a 1973 Buick, at 115 mph.

This was also recorded on film, so that the proof was not an issue.

Would I do that today?? Heck NO. But I was a lot younger back then.

Re: World's Fastest Tow - 141.998 MPH!

I am more impressed by a 1973 Buick towing a 31 foot Airstream at 115 mph, than with a highly-modified, 3/4 ton pickup with a 1,000+ hp Diesel V8, equipped with twin-turbos, upgraded intercooler, tuned exhaust and 2-stage nitrous-oxide system, towing a 14.5-foot, 2,700 pound SOB.

It's interesting to note that no WD, anti-sway hitch or SAFETY CHAINS were used. Perhaps, they figured it wouldn't make any difference at this speed.

However, like others, I wonder what the result would have been towing an Airstream...

My husband's comment was they should have used a Bambi and a Ford.

I'm just glad they didn't use an AS.... because when the inevitable happened and they wrecked it, it would have shown up on Craigslist as "a few dimples and scratches" a true renovation project. At least with the SOB, when it started tumbling end over end, it would have just been a matter of picking up all the pieces.

Re: Guiness World Record - Hi-Speed Tow

They should have CanAm make a hitch for the Bugatti Veyron and tow an Eddie Bauer:

(OK, I guess any of these cars would work...)

Do you think the trailer tires were Goodyear Marathons?

Wow.. at the end of the video it was interesting they 'unloaded' all those folks and the trailer did not bounce or rise on suspension...would love to have been there!

Who really cares about that much speed. A good line from the movie cars was -- back then people took to the road to have a good time not to make good time. Let us all slow down and enjoy the VIEW.
